Ghana National Fire Service Condemns Attacks on Firefighters, Pledges Legal Action

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has strongly condemned recent assaults on its personnel, pledging to pursue strict legal action against those responsible. In two separate incidents, firefighters were both physically and verbally attacked while carrying out their duties, prompting the GNFS to issue a firm response.

In a statement released on Tuesday, September 10, the GNFS detailed an incident that took place on September 3, 2024, involving ADO II Abdul Aziz Annor, a firefighter from the Ministries Fire Station. Annor sustained a fractured ankle after being assaulted by a driver and his mate in Accra. The attack occurred while Annor was replenishing the station’s fire truck at the La Palm T-Junction. Following the incident, the suspects were arrested and granted bail on September 9, 2024. Court proceedings are set to commence on October 24.

Just two days after this incident, another group of firefighters, this time from the Dansoman Fire Station, faced a similar attack. While responding to a fire near the Dansoman Roundabout, residents verbally and physically assaulted the fire personnel. Despite the hostility, the firefighters managed to contain the blaze with the assistance of additional fire trucks.

The GNFS has made it clear that any form of assault on its personnel is a criminal offense and will not be tolerated. The Service has also assured the public that it is committed to providing necessary medical care for the injured firefighter and will take all required legal steps to ensure justice for those affected.

In light of these incidents, the Dansoman Police have launched an investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. The GNFS has called on the public to respect and support its personnel, who risk their lives daily to protect communities across the country.

The Service’s statement reinforces its commitment to safeguarding its staff and upholding the law against any form of violence directed at its personnel. The GNFS has made it clear that such attacks undermine the crucial work firefighters do and that it will use every legal means to protect its members and maintain public order.
