John Kwadwo Alan Kyerematen, the founder of the Movement for Change and an independent presidential aspirant, officially filed his nomination on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. Kyerematen, a former prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), surprised many by naming former hiplife artist Elijah Kwame Danso as his running mate.
Elijah Kwame Danso, now a legal practitioner, was once part of the defunct hiplife group Echo, which gained widespread fame with their hit song “Gologo,” featuring the legendary hiplife artist Tinny. The song, produced by Richie Mensah, earned Echo a nomination for Best Afropop Song of the Year at the 2009 Ghana Music Awards, now known as the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
Performing under the stage name E-Nice, Elijah Kwame Danso first rose to fame after winning the prestigious Nescafé African Revelation competition in 2008. Along with his group member Charles Yeboah Danso, the duo wowed judges with their freestyle, live band, and acapella performances, ultimately defeating competitors Too Natural and 3 AM at the Kawukudi Park in Nima, Accra.
As winners of the competition, Echo received a prize package worth GH₵2000, which included funding for two music videos, an eight-track record, and a one-year lease on a three-bedroom house. Their success in the music industry continued as Echo made waves on the Ghanaian music scene, even landing a spot on the Channel O radio countdown—a significant achievement for Ghanaian artists at the time.
When Kyerematen introduced the 40-year-old Elijah Kwame Danso as his running mate, the announcement sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry. Elijah’s current career as a lawyer, journalist, and General Manager at Trassacco Group adds a unique dimension to his new role in politics. His transition from hiplife artist to vice-presidential nominee has brought his lesser-known past as a musician back into the spotlight.
As Elijah embarks on his political journey alongside John Kyerematen, his diverse career background is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the campaign. The former musician, now a respected legal professional, is poised to make an impact in the upcoming elections.
