Former Crystal Palace youth footballer Michael Boateng has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of serious drug offences involving nearly 20 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.
The 34-year-old, who holds both Ghanaian heritage and British nationality, was arrested on 14 February 2024 following a police raid on his flat in Croydon, south London. Officers discovered a sports bag containing 19.7 kilograms of the highly addictive Class A substance, making it one of the largest seizures of its kind in the borough in recent years.
Boateng lived at the property with his girlfriend and their infant son. “You were playing a significant role in the drug dealing enterprise,” the judge said. “The amount of drugs we are talking about — just shy of 20 kilograms — represents potentially millions of pounds at street level.”
CCTV footage obtained during the investigation showed Boateng collecting the sports bag containing the drugs outside his residence just a week before the police raid. The footage proved to be a key piece of evidence in linking him directly to the haul.
Adding to the severity of the case, the court heard that Boateng committed these offences while on bail for previous drug charges. This fact, Judge Flahive noted, further demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law.

“This was not a one-off mistake or a minor involvement,” he told Boateng. “You were a trusted participant in a high-level supply chain, moving dangerous and highly addictive substances in significant quantities. The consequences of such trade devastate lives and communities.”
The judge also emphasised the danger posed by crystal methamphetamine, describing it as a drug that “destroys individuals physically, mentally, and socially.”

News of Boateng’s conviction has sparked mixed reactions among those who knew him. Former teammates and coaches expressed sadness at the path his life has taken, recalling his discipline and talent during his youth football days.
