Don Jazzy Breaks Silence on Old UK Police Incident After Bankulli’s Revelation Resurfaces

Nigerian music mogul, producer, and founder of Mavin Records, Don Jazzy, has responded to a resurfaced account of an incident he experienced in the United Kingdom during the early stages of his career—an incident that has stirred intense conversations across social media, especially after being retold by his former associate Bankulli.

The revelation, which emerged during one of Bankulli’s recent speaking engagements, attempted to shed light on the struggles and survival tactics many young African creatives face abroad while trying to build a name for themselves. However, Don Jazzy has now clarified the story, correcting critical details and assuring fans that he did not evade the police as widely suggested.

Bankulli’s Revelation Sparks Debate

During the event, Bankulli narrated how a young Don Jazzy, then grinding in London and navigating the tough realities of pursuing a music career overseas, was involved in a car accident while returning from a show. According to him, Don Jazzy fell asleep behind the wheel, resulting in a crash that left the vehicle badly damaged.

Bankulli claimed that Don Jazzy quickly abandoned the car when he realized the police had arrived, removing the number plate before fleeing the scene.

He stated:

“Because Don Jazzy was trying to survive in London, he had an accident and the car got destroyed. Don Jazzy abandoned the car. He was coming from a show and he fell asleep while driving and crashed his car.

He left the car, removed the plate number and ran away. Why? Because you would pay more to carry the car away from there than to repair it. But look at Jazzy now, he has fleets of cars.”

The comments were intended to highlight how much the music executive has grown—from struggling in the UK to becoming one of Africa’s most successful entertainment figures. However, the dramatic retelling ignited fears among fans over whether Don Jazzy could face trouble if the UK authorities revisited the matter.

Fans Express Concern Over Possible Legal Repercussions

Shortly after Bankulli’s remarks went viral, an X user expressed concern that Don Jazzy could be at risk if he attempted to return to the UK, arguing that such a statement could prompt authorities to revisit an old case.

The user wrote:

“With this reckless talk from Bankulli, I really hope Don Jazzy isn’t planning a trip to London. They can reopen a 20-year-old case!”

The post quickly gathered reactions, with many fans condemning Bankulli for sharing the story publicly. Some felt the disclosure was unnecessary, while others urged Don Jazzy to address the situation directly.

Don Jazzy Clears the Air: ‘No Panic’

In a swift and calm response, Don Jazzy took to X to clarify what truly happened—dismissing claims that he had ever fled from the police and emphasising that the retelling was simply inaccurate due to the passage of time.

He wrote:

“Lol no panic. It’s been so long, so he doesn’t remember the story exactly.

I actually waited for the police. They came and gave me a breathalyser to determine if I was drunk. I wasn’t, but the car was impounded.

The fine to collect the car back was more than the cheap car, so I left it with them lol.”

His response not only cleared major misconceptions but also eased the anxieties of supporters who worried the musician might have been entangled in a more serious legal matter.

A Story of Humble Beginnings and Resilience

While the narratives differ in detail, both accounts highlight the challenging journey Don Jazzy endured before becoming one of Africa’s most respected and influential music executives. His time in the UK was marked by perseverance, long nights of studio sessions, navigating immigration challenges, and striving to survive while building the foundation of what would become a multi-million dollar music empire.

Leaving a cheap car with the authorities due to the cost of retrieving it paints a vivid picture of how financially strained the life of a young creative abroad can be. Today, Don Jazzy stands as a symbol of how far talent, consistency, and adaptability can take someone, regardless of their beginnings.

Social Media Reacts to Don Jazzy’s Clarification

Fan reactions to Don Jazzy’s clarification have largely been positive, with many praising him for handling the matter maturely and transparently. Others used the moment to celebrate his journey and success.

Many Nigerians also reflected on the broader message — the struggles of migrants trying to find their footing in foreign countries while carrying big dreams.

Don Jazzy’s Legacy Remains Untouched

Despite the brief controversy, Don Jazzy’s reputation remains intact. As the founder of Mavin Records, he has been instrumental in shaping the careers of global stars such as Rema, Ayra Starr, Tiwa Savage, Johnny Drille, Ladipoe, and many more.

Today, he stands tall as a mentor, businessman, and creative powerhouse whose impact on Afrobeats is undeniable. The resurfaced incident only further humanizes his journey, reminding fans that even the biggest stars come from humble and sometimes difficult beginnings.
