The Rights of Nature–Ghana Movement (RoNAG) has been honoured as the most influential non-governmental contributor at the 2025 Climate Education Community of Practice (CECOP) Summit, a high-level gathering of Ghana’s leading environmental and educational organisations. The recognition highlights RoNAG’s exceptional impact and consistent leadership in advancing climate education nationwide.
The summit, held at the Radach Conference Centre in Tamale in the Northern Region, formed part of the broader Complementary Climate Education Programme (CCEP). The event brought together key organisations including AfriKids, Climate Smart Training Programme, EduSpots, Orgiis, Rights & Advocacy Initiatives Network – Ghana, RAINS Ghana, SUNG Foundation, Strategic Youth Network for Development (SYND), and EcoCare Ghana.
The CECOP initiative, facilitated by EduSpots and funded by the Gower Street Trust, has become a crucial peer-learning platform where organisations exchange strategies, explore innovative models, and collectively influence national climate education practices. This work is particularly urgent as climate change increasingly disrupts the lives and education of schoolchildren across Ghana.
Amid strong contributions from all participating organisations, RoNAG was singled out for its profound influence, consistency, and leadership within the CECOP community. The Director and Lead Campaigner of RoNAG, Dr. Dickson Adom, who also serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Educational Innovations in Science and Technology at KNUST, received the award on behalf of the organisation and its team.
“This recognition is a testament to our collective commitment to not only advocate the rights of nature but to equip the next generation with the knowledge to protect nature,” Dr. Adom said upon receiving the honour.
Beyond receiving the award, Dr. Adom played a central role in the summit’s knowledge-sharing engagements. He delivered a detailed presentation on RoNAG’s field projects, which employ grassroots-driven approaches to environmental stewardship, community empowerment, and school-based ecological learning.
One of the standout contributions celebrated at the summit was RoNAG’s BASIK (Basic School Indigenous Knowledge Inspired) pedagogical guide, a comprehensive resource tailored for basic school teachers to support the teaching of native trees. The guide features lesson plans, activity worksheets, descriptive content on twenty native tree species, and reflective exercises. Each species is presented with its local names, ecological functions in mitigating climate change, and its medicinal, cultural, spiritual, and economic relevance. The guide also includes twenty environmental folk songs designed to enrich learning using the music intelligence theory.
The BASIK guide, available for free download at https://www.ronag.org/cce, showcases RoNAG’s commitment to merging Indigenous knowledge with modern climate education.
During his presentation, Dr. Adom brought the BASIK guide to life by demonstrating how educators can use proverbs, cultural symbolism, local languages, and folk songs to inspire students to appreciate, protect, and nurture Ghana’s indigenous tree species.
“This guide is more than a teaching tool; it is a bridge connecting students to their ancestral wisdom, land, and cultural heritage,” he explained.
“By using our cultural heritage—our proverbs and our songs—to understand and value our native flora, we foster a deeper sense of ecological citizenship from a young age.”
The summit reinforced the importance of collaboration, bringing together partners working across eco-clubs, tree planting, sustainable agriculture, youth-led climate action, and community-based environmental outreach. RoNAG’s recognition as the topmost NGO and its presentation of culturally grounded, innovative educational tools firmly position the organisation as a leading force in building a climate-resilient future for Ghana through nature-based education.
