The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, as the region’s sole candidate for the prestigious position of Chairperson of the African Union (AU) when the continental body’s rotating leadership reaches West Africa in 2027. The endorsement, which was announced during the Council’s ninety-fifth ordinary session in Abuja, marks a significant moment for both Ghana and the West African region as they seek to strengthen their influence within Africa’s highest political organ.
According to ECOWAS, the decision reflects strong regional consensus on Ghana’s longstanding reputation for democratic governance, peacebuilding, and leadership within continental affairs. The endorsement will now be submitted to the Authority of Heads of State and Government—the highest decision-making body of ECOWAS—for formal adoption on Sunday, December 14, 2025. If approved, it will set Ghana on course to reclaim the AU Chairmanship, a role the country last held under former President Kwame Nkrumah during the early years of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).
In a statement released on Friday, December 12, 2025, ECOWAS expressed profound appreciation to all member states for rallying behind Ghana’s candidacy. The organisation highlighted that the endorsement aligns with the broader regional objective of solidifying West Africa’s collective voice in continental governance. The statement emphasised that the region remains committed to presenting unified candidates to international and continental bodies, a strategy designed to maximize influence and ensure ECOWAS interests are well-represented at all diplomatic levels.
“Determined to work in a concerted manner to support the candidates of ECOWAS Member States or their nationals in international organizations, including the African Union, to ensure that the interests of ECOWAS continue to be promoted and protected,” the statement noted. ECOWAS further stressed that presenting a united front not only strengthens the region’s bargaining power but also enhances the credibility of its candidates on the global stage.
The statement also underscored a deep sense of purpose in adopting a common regional position. “Desiring to adopt a common position for effective support and voting in favour of the election of the Republic of Ghana to the Chairmanship of the African Union in 2027,” it continued, pointing to the importance of stability and unity in securing key leadership positions within the AU.
President Mahama’s endorsement comes at a time when the African continent faces multiple complex challenges, including economic recovery, security threats, climate-related disruptions, and governance setbacks in several regions. His experience—as a former ECOWAS Chair, a former President, and a global advocate for democracy—positions him as a compelling candidate capable of guiding the AU through an era requiring diplomacy, unity, and visionary policy direction.
Observers have noted that Mahama’s leadership on regional peace missions, particularly his contributions to resolving political tensions in The Gambia, Mali, and other parts of West Africa, significantly influenced ECOWAS’ decision. Beyond his conflict-resolution expertise, Mahama has also been credited for promoting digital transformation, infrastructure development, youth empowerment, and social inclusion during his tenure. These attributes, ECOWAS believes, align with the AU’s priorities and the aspirations of the African populace.
The Council of Ministers further emphasised that Ghana’s candidacy is reflective of the country’s broader contributions to continental affairs. Ghana has long been regarded as a pillar of democracy in Africa, with consistent transitions of power, a vibrant civil society, and strong institutional frameworks. These institutional strengths not only bolster Ghana’s international reputation but also strengthen its ability to represent Africa’s collective interests effectively.
Moreover, ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to elevating qualified and credible West African leaders to continental roles. The organisation stressed that its unified endorsement is part of a broader strategy to enhance the region’s visibility and representation in global governance platforms. This strategic alignment, according to the Council, is essential to ensure that West Africa’s priorities—such as economic integration, peace and security, and development financing—are championed at the highest levels.
The Council’s recommendation now awaits formal ratification by the Authority of Heads of State and Government. The endorsement urges the Authority to officially adopt the declaration supporting Ghana’s bid for the 2027 AU chairmanship. If approved, the next phase will involve coordinated diplomatic engagements across Africa to secure majority support during the AU elections.
Political analysts predict that Ghana’s chances are strong given ECOWAS’ consensus position, which eliminates intra-regional competition and sends a powerful signal to other African blocs. Ghana is also expected to leverage its long-standing relationships with countries across Central, East, Southern, and North Africa to build a broad coalition in support of Mahama’s candidature.
For ECOWAS, the endorsement represents not just a vote of confidence in Ghana, but a reaffirmation of the region’s commitment to unity, strategic diplomacy, and continental leadership. The organisation believes that Mahama’s experience, vision, and diplomatic credentials will play a vital role in advancing the AU’s Agenda 2063, deepening continental integration, and addressing Africa’s pressing challenges.
As the continent prepares for a pivotal period marked by geopolitical shifts, technological transformation, and economic restructuring, the leadership of the AU will be critical. ECOWAS’ endorsement therefore signals a proactive step toward ensuring capable, experienced, and forward-looking leadership for Africa’s future.
