The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), , has called for stronger collective action across the world to tackle pollution and the growing challenges posed by climate change, stressing that initiatives that promote a safer climate should be fully supported for the sake of public health and sustainable development.
Okonjo-Iweala made the call on Monday in Umuahia during the commissioning of electric buses procured by the Abia State Government, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation systems. The WTO chief praised the Abia State administration for taking a bold and forward-looking step in addressing climate-related concerns at the sub-national level.
Speaking at the event, Okonjo-Iweala emphasized that pollution and climate change remain among the most pressing global challenges of the 21st century, affecting not only the environment but also human health, economic productivity, and social stability. She noted that while Africa contributes a relatively small share to global carbon emissions, the continent bears a disproportionate burden of climate-related impacts.
“One of the biggest things we suffer from in the world is the problem of pollution and climate change,” she said. “Even though Africa contributes only about three percent of global carbon emissions, which is very limited, all of us still have a responsibility to contribute to a better climate for the world.”
She explained that climate change has far-reaching consequences, from increased heatwaves and flooding to declining agricultural productivity and rising health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations. According to her, addressing these challenges requires coordinated efforts by governments, the private sector, international organizations, and citizens.
The WTO Director-General commended Abia State Governor and his administration for what she described as a pioneering initiative. She noted that Abia is the first state in Nigeria to officially launch electric buses for public transportation, setting an example that other states can follow.
Okonjo-Iweala expressed optimism that the successful rollout of electric buses in Abia would encourage other state governments to explore cleaner transport options as part of broader climate and environmental strategies. She added that such initiatives also present economic opportunities, including job creation, innovation, and the development of new skills in the green economy.
In his address at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Alex Otti said the introduction of electric buses signaled a new direction for Abia State and reflected the global shift towards zero-emission transportation. He noted that the world is increasingly moving away from fossil fuel-dependent systems in response to climate change, and Abia is positioning itself to be part of that future.
“The world is heading towards zero emission, and Abia State is determined not to be left behind,” the governor said. “These electric buses represent our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the well-being of our people.”
Governor Otti disclosed that the electric buses were designed with inclusivity in mind, particularly to accommodate the needs of Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs). According to him, features such as easy access, adequate space, and user-friendly design were incorporated to ensure that the buses serve all categories of commuters without discrimination.
He further explained that when fully charged, the electric buses are capable of covering distances ranging from 400 to 450 kilometers, making them suitable for daily urban transportation while reducing dependence on petrol and diesel-powered vehicles. The governor noted that this would help cut down emissions, lower noise pollution, and contribute to a cleaner urban environment.
As part of efforts to encourage public acceptance and awareness, Governor Otti announced that the electric buses would provide free transportation for commuters in Abia State between December and the early part of January 2026. The free rides, he said, would operate on scheduled routes and allow residents to experience firsthand the benefits of electric mobility.
“This is our way of introducing the people to this new system and demonstrating that clean transportation is not only possible but also efficient and comfortable,” Otti said.
On security and passenger safety, the governor revealed that the buses are equipped with special surveillance cameras designed to monitor activities inside the vehicles. He explained that the cameras would record and help trace any unlawful acts, thereby enhancing the safety of passengers and deterring crime.
According to Otti, safety remains a top priority of his administration, and the deployment of technology in public transportation is part of a broader strategy to improve service delivery and protect commuters.
The commissioning of the electric buses comes at a time when Nigeria, like many other countries, is grappling with the environmental and economic impacts of climate change. Rising fuel costs, air pollution, and urban congestion have renewed calls for alternative transportation solutions that are both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
Experts say that electric buses can play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and lowering long-term transportation costs if supported by the right infrastructure and policies. However, they also caution that sustained investment, maintenance, and public education are critical to the success of such initiatives.
For many observers, Abia State’s move represents a practical demonstration of how sub-national governments can contribute to global climate goals while addressing local challenges. The presence of the WTO Director-General at the commissioning ceremony further underscored the international significance of the initiative.
As climate change continues to dominate global policy discussions, initiatives like Abia’s electric bus programme highlight the importance of translating commitments into concrete actions. With growing pressure on governments to adopt sustainable practices, the success or otherwise of this project may influence similar efforts across Nigeria and beyond.
