Tems Becomes First African Female Artist with Seven Billboard Hot 100 Entries

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, professionally known as Tems, has made history as the first African female artist to record seven entries on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The milestone was achieved after her song “What You Need” debuted at number 93 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, bringing her total appearances on the chart to seven. The achievement reinforces her growing global influence and commercial success in one of the world’s most competitive music markets.

With this accomplishment, Tems now equals the record held by Nigerian superstar Burna Boy and South African rock band Seether, who each have seven entries on the Billboard Hot 100. However, Tems stands out as the only African woman to reach that benchmark.

The Billboard Hot 100 ranks songs based on a combination of streaming numbers, radio airplay and sales data in the United States. Multiple appearances on the chart reflect consistent mainstream appeal and a strong international fan base.

Tems’ rise to global recognition has been driven by her unique fusion of Afrobeats, R&B and alternative influences, as well as strategic collaborations with major international artists. Her breakthrough moment on the Billboard Hot 100 came in 2022 when she became the first African artist to debut at number one on the chart. That historic feat was achieved through her collaboration with American rapper Future and Canadian rapper Drake on the hit single “Wait For U.”

The success of “Wait For U” significantly expanded her international presence and marked a turning point for African music on the global stage. The song not only topped charts but also earned widespread critical acclaim, solidifying Tems’ position as one of Africa’s leading musical exports.

In recent years, African artists have increasingly gained recognition in global music markets, with Afrobeats evolving from a regional genre into a dominant international sound. Tems has played a central role in this transformation, contributing to the genre’s crossover appeal while maintaining her distinctive vocal style and artistic authenticity.

Her latest chart entry with “What You Need” underscores her consistency and staying power in an industry defined by rapid trends and intense competition. Industry observers note that sustaining repeated Billboard Hot 100 entries requires a combination of strong streaming performance, strategic promotion and loyal fan engagement.

Tems’ influence extends beyond chart performance. She has received major industry recognition, including Grammy Awards, and has performed on some of the world’s biggest stages. Her artistry has resonated across diverse audiences, bridging cultural and geographical boundaries.

Looking ahead, Tems is poised to potentially break the current tie with Burna Boy and Seether. American rapper J. Cole’s upcoming release, “Bunce Road Blues,” featuring Tems and Future, is widely expected to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 next week. Should the track enter the chart, it would mark her eighth appearance and establish her as the African artist with the most entries in the chart’s history.

Music analysts view this trajectory as evidence of the growing integration of African talent into mainstream global music ecosystems. Collaborations between African and Western artists have become more frequent, and streaming platforms have played a crucial role in amplifying cross-continental exposure.

Tems’ journey from Lagos to global prominence also highlights the evolving infrastructure of Nigeria’s music industry. Improved production quality, international distribution networks and digital platforms have enabled artists to compete at the highest levels of the global market.

Beyond commercial achievements, Tems has emerged as a cultural ambassador for African creativity. Her success reflects broader shifts in global music consumption patterns, where audiences increasingly embrace diverse sounds and narratives.

As anticipation builds around upcoming chart releases, Tems continues to strengthen her legacy as a pioneering figure in African music history. Whether through solo releases or high-profile collaborations, her trajectory signals continued expansion and influence in the international music landscape.
