Samson Adamu Appointed Interim CAF General Secretary Amid Governance Scrutiny

The Confederation of African Football has appointed Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as interim General Secretary following the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba, a move that comes at a critical moment for the organisation.

Adamu’s appointment was confirmed as part of a transitional arrangement, with CAF’s vice-presidents expected to oversee the process of recruiting a substantive General Secretary in the coming months. The decision is aimed at ensuring continuity in the administration of African football while the governing body works to stabilise its operations.

His elevation to the role places him at the centre of CAF’s leadership during a period marked by heightened scrutiny and internal challenges. In recent months, the organisation has faced criticism over a series of high-profile decisions that have raised questions about governance, transparency and consistency.

One of the most contentious issues has been the handling of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 final. CAF’s decision to overturn the result of the match, strip Senegal of the title and award a 3-0 victory to Morocco has triggered widespread debate across the football community. The case has since been referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with a final ruling still pending.

The controversy has placed additional pressure on CAF’s leadership, highlighting the need for clear communication, strong institutional frameworks and effective decision-making processes. Adamu assumes office at a time when restoring confidence in the organisation has become a priority.

The resignation of Mosengo-Omba followed a turbulent period that also saw the postponement of a major women’s competition at short notice. That development further intensified concerns about planning, coordination and administrative efficiency within CAF. Observers have pointed to these incidents as evidence of deeper structural issues that require urgent attention.

Adamu is expected to bring a wealth of experience to the interim role. Prior to his appointment, he served as CAF’s Director of Competitions, where he was responsible for overseeing a wide range of tournaments across the continent. In that capacity, he managed the organisation of approximately 816 matches annually, spanning around 27 competitions over a two-year cycle.

His work in competitions has given him direct insight into the operational demands of African football, including scheduling, logistics, compliance and stakeholder coordination. This experience is likely to be critical as he navigates the complexities of his new position.

Before joining CAF, Adamu was the Chief Executive Officer of Copa Lagos Beach Soccer, a prominent sporting event that contributed to the growth of beach soccer in Africa. During his tenure, he played a key role in developing the tournament into a recognised platform for both local and international participation.

His background in event management and football development is expected to support CAF’s efforts to strengthen its competitions and improve organisational efficiency. However, the challenges he faces extend beyond operational matters.

As interim General Secretary, Adamu will be tasked with helping to restore stability within CAF’s administrative structure. This includes reinforcing internal processes, improving coordination among member associations and ensuring that the organisation adheres to established governance standards.

The coming months will be particularly important, as CAF prepares for upcoming competitions while also addressing ongoing disputes and institutional concerns. The role of the General Secretary is central to the day-to-day functioning of the organisation, making Adamu’s leadership during this transition period especially significant.

CAF’s vice-presidents, who are overseeing the recruitment of a permanent General Secretary, are expected to prioritise candidates with strong administrative credentials and a clear vision for reform. The selection process will be closely watched, given the current focus on governance within the organisation.

For Adamu, the interim position represents both an opportunity and a test. His ability to manage immediate challenges while laying the groundwork for longer-term improvements will be key to shaping perceptions of CAF’s leadership.

The organisation’s credibility has come under increased examination, and there is growing expectation from stakeholders for reforms that enhance transparency, accountability and professionalism. Addressing these expectations will require decisive action and sustained commitment from CAF’s leadership.

At the same time, African football continues to grow in global relevance, with increased investment, rising talent and expanding fan engagement. Ensuring that CAF’s administrative structures keep pace with this growth is essential to maintaining the momentum of the sport across the continent.

Adamu’s appointment signals a step toward continuity, but it also underscores the urgency of broader institutional strengthening. The interim period will likely serve as a bridge toward more comprehensive reforms aimed at improving governance and operational effectiveness.

As CAF navigates this phase, the focus will remain on delivering successful competitions, resolving ongoing disputes and rebuilding trust among stakeholders. The decisions taken in the coming months are expected to have a lasting impact on the organisation’s direction.

For now, attention is on how Adamu will steer CAF through this period of transition. His performance in the role will not only influence the organisation’s immediate stability but could also shape discussions about leadership and reform within African football.
