Ghana is set to deepen its commitment to continental integration with the introduction of a free visa regime for all African nationals, as President John Dramani Mahama moves to expand mobility, trade, and economic cooperation across the continent.
The policy, scheduled to take effect on May 25, 2026, will coincide with the celebration of Africa Day and is expected to mark a significant milestone in Ghana’s long-standing advocacy for Pan-African unity. Under the new system, African travellers will be able to obtain electronic visas at no cost through a digital platform that is expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks.
The announcement was made by President Mahama during a state visit by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, highlighting the growing diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations. The Ghanaian leader described the initiative as a strategic intervention aimed at positioning Ghana as a central hub for tourism, business, and intra-African trade.
He emphasised that the move reflects Ghana’s broader vision of fostering unity across the continent by removing long-standing barriers to movement. According to him, the introduction of a free e-visa system will simplify travel procedures and make Ghana more accessible to citizens from across Africa.
President Mahama also pointed out that Ghana and Zimbabwe already maintain a visa-free arrangement, allowing citizens of both countries to travel freely without the need for entry permits. He described this bilateral framework as a model for what the continent should strive toward, where Africans can move freely across borders to pursue opportunities and strengthen cultural ties.
The new policy is expected to be supported by wider reforms within Ghana’s immigration system. Authorities are working to modernise processes through digitalisation, ensuring that the e-visa platform operates efficiently while maintaining security standards. Ghana’s latest move builds on earlier steps taken to liberalise its visa regime. In January 2025, the country introduced visa-free travel for holders of African passports under a policy initiated by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. That decision aligned with the broader vision of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which promotes the free movement of people as a key driver of continental development.
With the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat based in Accra, Ghana continues to play a leading role in advancing regional economic integration. The free visa initiative is expected to complement the objectives of the trade agreement by facilitating the movement of entrepreneurs, investors, and skilled professionals across borders.
Experts believe the policy could have far-reaching economic benefits if effectively implemented. Increased ease of travel is likely to boost tourism, encourage cross-border commerce, and attract investment into key sectors of the Ghanaian economy.
