Madina Woman Missing After Alleged Abuse and Salon Fire

Residents of Madina-Zongo in Accra are still reeling from the sudden disappearance of local hairdresser Amama Bukari, who vanished without a trace following a series of disturbing incidents, including alleged domestic abuse and a suspected arson attack on her salon.

Bukari, a well-respected and hardworking individual, owned and operated Amas Unisex Salon near Madina Zongo Junction, where she supported herself and her child. Neighbours describe her as a focused and reserved person, largely uninvolved in community disputes, but facing ongoing challenges in her personal relationships.

Sources close to the community reveal that Bukari was allegedly experiencing episodes of abuse, which, despite being known to some residents, received minimal intervention. “People here are often hesitant to interfere in personal matters,” a resident explained, adding, “but it was evident she was struggling.”

Tensions escalated in mid-2022 when rumours about Bukari’s private life began circulating, sparking reactions from some residents. A confrontation ensued, attracting a crowd and heightening emotions. “It was chaotic, with shouting and a large gathering. It got out of control quickly,” a local trader recounted.

The situation took a drastic turn on September 9, 2022, when Bukari’s salon was destroyed in a fire believed to be deliberate. Eyewitnesses describe the blaze as rapid and devastating, consuming the structure and nearby shops. “The fire started suddenly, spreading quickly. By the time help arrived, everything was gone,” a nearby shop owner said.

The Ghana National Fire Service responded to the scene, and sources indicate the incident was classified as arson. Many residents link the fire to the earlier tensions, insisting it was not an accident. “People were upset about what they’d heard. It didn’t seem accidental,” one resident claimed.

Following the fire, Bukari reportedly went into hiding, with some sightings reported in other parts of the municipality shortly after. However, her whereabouts remain unknown, with no confirmed updates from family or authorities.

The case has reignited discussions on domestic violence, community reactions, and the challenges victims face in seeking protection. While support institutions like the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit exist, social stigma, fear, and family pressures often discourage reporting.

The abandoned remains of Amas Unisex Salon serve as a stark reminder of the events. For Madina-Zongo residents, one question lingers: where is Amama Bukari?
