Sports Minister Backs Queiroz to Lead Black Stars Revival

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has expressed strong confidence in newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz, describing his arrival as a significant boost for Ghana’s preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese tactician has been handed a four-month contract to guide the senior national team through the global tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico this summer. His appointment comes at a pivotal moment, as Ghana seeks to regain its competitive edge on the international stage.

Queiroz takes over from former head coach Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties following a series of unconvincing performances by the team. The Black Stars endured back-to-back defeats during the March international window, raising concerns about form and prompting the need for a new technical direction.

Ahead of his official unveiling at the Alisa Hotel, Queiroz was formally introduced to the Sports and Recreation Minister at the ministry. The meeting brought together key stakeholders in Ghana football, marking the beginning of what is expected to be a focused and results-driven tenure.

Speaking during the engagement, Kofi Adams praised the experience and pedigree of the Portuguese coach, expressing optimism about the impact he could have on the national team.

“We are going to benefit from him, and as the saying goes, the old wine tastes the best,” the Buem Member of Parliament stated.

He emphasized that Queiroz’s extensive exposure to both club and international football would be invaluable as Ghana prepares for the challenges ahead.

“He has gathered experience all over, and his experience will be put before the Black Stars of Ghana, and so we are so lucky to have such an experienced coach, not just at the club level but at the national level and at the World Cup stage,” he added.

The endorsement from the sector minister reflects a broader sense of optimism surrounding the appointment. Queiroz is widely regarded as one of the most experienced coaches in international football, having managed several national teams across different continents over a career spanning more than four decades.

His previous roles include managing teams such as Portugal, Iran, Egypt, South Africa, Japan, Qatar and Oman. He has also served as an assistant coach at Manchester United, gaining experience at the highest levels of club football.

This wealth of experience is expected to play a key role in shaping Ghana’s preparations for the World Cup. Known for his structured approach, tactical discipline and emphasis on organization, Queiroz is expected to bring stability and clarity to a team that has struggled for consistency in recent times.

The official introduction ceremony was attended by President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, members of the Black Stars management committee, and Executive Council members of the Association. Their presence underscored the importance of the moment and the collective commitment to supporting the new head coach.

For the Ghana Football Association, the appointment represents a strategic decision aimed at restoring confidence and improving performance. The Black Stars remain one of the most important national teams on the continent, and expectations for success remain high among supporters.

Queiroz will begin his tenure with preparatory matches against Mexico and Wales. These fixtures are expected to provide an opportunity to assess the squad, test tactical systems, and build cohesion ahead of the tournament.

The upcoming games will also offer insight into the coach’s approach and the direction he intends to take the team. With limited time before the World Cup, every match will be crucial in shaping the squad’s readiness.

Ghana will be making its fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, having previously competed in the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022 editions. While the team achieved its best result with a quarterfinal finish in 2010, recent campaigns have ended in group-stage exits.

For the 2026 tournament, the Black Stars have been placed in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The group presents a significant challenge, with each opponent bringing strong international credentials and competitive experience.

Ghana will open its campaign against Panama on June 17, a match that could be crucial in setting the tone for the tournament. The team will then face England on June 23 before concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

These fixtures will test the resilience, tactical discipline and overall quality of the squad. Success in the group stage will depend on effective preparation, strong leadership, and the ability to execute under pressure.

After early exits in the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, there is a renewed determination to make a stronger impact on the global stage. The appointment of Queiroz is seen as part of a broader effort to rebuild and reposition the team for success.

For the new head coach, the task ahead is both demanding and time-sensitive. With a short-term contract and high expectations, his ability to quickly implement his philosophy and get the best out of the players will be critical.

Support from key stakeholders, including government, the football association, and the public, is expected to play an important role in the team’s journey. The message from the Sports Minister is clear: unity and belief will be essential in achieving success.

As preparations intensify, attention will focus on team selection, tactical adjustments, and performance in the upcoming friendlies. These elements will shape Ghana’s readiness for the tournament and determine how far the team can go.

For now, there is cautious optimism that the combination of experience, leadership, and renewed focus can deliver positive results. With the World Cup fast approaching, the Black Stars enter a new chapter under Carlos Queiroz, with hopes of restoring pride and making a meaningful impact on football’s biggest stage.
