Financial well-being must define next phase of digital finance – MMFL CEO

Accra, Ghana, August 21, 2026: The Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney Fintech LTD (MMFL), Shaibu Haruna, has called for Ghana’s digital finance agenda to move beyond access and focus more deliberately on improving customers’ financial health and long-term well-being.

Speaking during a panel discussion on “Mobile Money, Agency Banking and Digital Payments” at the inaugural Ecobank–Joy Business Financial Dialogue Series, Mr. Haruna said the next phase of digital finance must deliver practical solutions that enable people to save, borrow, invest and plan their finances more securely.

The dialogue, held under the theme “Driving Financial Inclusion Through Digital Transformation,” brought together regulators, financial institutions, fintech companies and other industry leaders to examine how technology can expand access to financial services and strengthen economic participation.

“MobileMoney has gone beyond simply bringing people into the financial ecosystem. The focus has shifted from financial inclusion to financial health and financial well-being. We are building solutions that address customers’ real needs,” he said.

Mr. Haruna said MMFL’s recent partnerships with IC Wealth, Misika, Coronation and Flexi Pension reflected this shift, giving customers access to a broader range of financial solutions covering investments, credit and pensions.

He noted that while access to digital financial services had improved significantly, the industry must now focus on ensuring that customers derive meaningful and lasting value from the services available to them.

He also stressed the importance of continuous customer engagement, understanding their challenges and building trust in digital financial services.

“The key lesson is simple: involve the entire ecosystem, engage customers continuously, understand their pain points and build solutions that solve those problems. At the same time, we must continue building trust in digital financial services,” he added.

Other panellists also highlighted the importance of collaboration in strengthening Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem.

Akosua Blay, Chief Business Officer of Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GHIPSS), said interoperability had been critical to the growth of the sector by enabling banks, fintech companies, payment service providers and mobile money operators to connect more seamlessly through shared infrastructure.

Jacqueline Dufie Mpare, Managing Director of Pan African Savings and Loans Ltd, said digital tools were also helping financial institutions reach more customers, improve customer profiling and make better lending decisions, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The discussions come ahead of the launch of MMFL’s Fintech Lab, an innovation platform designed to bring together fintech companies, developers, partners and other ecosystem stakeholders to co-create practical digital finance solutions.

The platform is expected to focus on solutions that respond to customers’ changing needs while contributing to Ghana’s broader digital financial transformation.

The inaugural Financial Dialogue Series featured discussions on banking, fintech, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and digital payments, providing industry stakeholders with an opportunity to examine emerging trends and challenges shaping Ghana’s financial sector.
