Dangote Refinery Raises Diesel Price to N1,800 After Three Days

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has increased its diesel price to N1,800 per litre, just three days after reducing it from N1,780 to N1,700 per litre, reversing its earlier price cut.

A market survey reported by DAILY POST on Saturday, October 10, 2026, showed that the refinery had raised its gantry price for Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, by N100 per litre.

The latest adjustment means diesel is now selling at N1,800 per litre at the refinery, compared with N1,700 per litre following the earlier reduction announced on October 7.

The increase also places the current price N20 above the N1,780 per litre rate that prevailed before the reduction.

Despite the latest upward adjustment, Dangote Refinery’s diesel remains cheaper than prices quoted by several depot operators in Nigeria.

According to the market survey, depot operators, including Pivot, African Terminal and Integrated, were selling diesel at N1,905 per litre at the time of the report. This leaves Dangote Refinery’s price N105 lower per litre than the rates quoted by the depot operators.

The development comes amid continued attention to the cost of petroleum products and its potential implications for businesses, transport operators and consumers.

Diesel is widely used by commercial vehicles, generators, factories and other businesses that depend on it for transportation and power generation. Changes in its price can therefore affect operating expenses, particularly for businesses that rely heavily on diesel-powered equipment.

The latest increase could also put pressure on retail prices in Abuja and surrounding areas, where diesel was selling between N1,960 and N1,980 per litre, according to the report.

However, the extent to which retailers adjust their prices will depend on factors including their existing stock, transportation costs, supply arrangements and prevailing market conditions.

Timeline of price changes

The sequence of adjustments shows how quickly the refinery’s diesel price has changed within a short period.

Before October 7, Dangote Refinery’s diesel price stood at N1,780 per litre. The refinery subsequently reduced the price by N80, bringing it down to N1,700 per litre.

Three days later, a market survey published on October 10 indicated that the price had increased to N1,800 per litre.

The latest increase of N100 per litre more than reversed the previous N80 reduction, leaving the product N20 more expensive than it was before the cut.

The figures represent changes in the refinery’s reported gantry price and should be distinguished from retail prices charged at filling stations and other outlets.

Gantry prices are the rates at which products are sold at the refinery’s loading facilities. Retail prices may be higher because of distribution, transportation, storage and other operating expenses incurred along the supply chain.

Consequently, the price charged by the refinery does not necessarily reflect the final amount paid by consumers.

Impact on businesses and consumers

Diesel price movements remain important to businesses across several sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Transport operators use diesel to power trucks and other commercial vehicles involved in moving goods between production centres, warehouses, markets and retail outlets. An increase in the cost of diesel can raise their operating expenses and potentially influence the prices charged for transporting goods.

Manufacturers and other industrial operators may also face higher production costs when diesel prices rise, particularly where generators and diesel-powered machinery are essential to their operations.

Small and medium-sized businesses that depend on generators for electricity may also feel the effect of higher diesel prices through increased expenditure on power generation.

For businesses operating on narrow profit margins, even a relatively small increase in fuel costs can require adjustments to budgets, selling prices or other operating expenses.

Consumers may eventually feel the impact if higher transportation and production costs are passed on through the prices of goods and services. However, the extent of any impact will depend on how long the higher prices persist and how businesses respond.

The relationship between refinery prices and retail prices is not always immediate. Some retailers may continue selling products purchased at earlier prices, while others may adjust their rates as new supplies arrive.

Crude oil prices in focus

The latest diesel price adjustment was reported alongside movements in international crude oil prices.

According to figures cited by DAILY POST, Brent crude was trading at $104 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) stood at $91 per barrel at the time of the report.

Crude oil prices are among the factors that can influence the cost of producing petroleum products. However, diesel prices also depend on other market conditions, including refining costs, product demand, supply availability, exchange rates and distribution expenses.

The reported crude oil prices alone do not establish the specific reason for Dangote Refinery’s latest adjustment. No direct explanation for the N100 increase was provided in the market survey cited in the report.

Market participants will therefore be watching subsequent price movements to determine whether the increase is temporary or signals a further adjustment in diesel prices.

For now, the latest figures show that Dangote Refinery has moved from N1,780 per litre to N1,700 and then to N1,800 within three days of the reported reduction.

The reversal places the current price above its earlier level, while the refinery continues to sell below the prices quoted by the depot operators identified in the market survey.
