IGP Dampare Warns Against Electoral Misconduct Ahead of December Elections

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has issued a resolute warning to the public against engaging in any form of electoral misconduct as Ghana prepares for its December elections. Speaking at the commissioning of a new police station in Akyem-Manso in the Eastern Region, Dr. Dampare emphasized that anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law, urging citizens to uphold peace and respect for democratic processes.

Dr. Dampare used the opportunity to reassure Ghanaians of the police service’s readiness to ensure peaceful elections. Highlighting various strategies, he mentioned the service’s focus on detecting and addressing early warning signs of potential unrest, ensuring a secure environment for voters to exercise their rights without fear. “Don’t be lured into creating confusion during the polls because my people will not spare you,” he cautioned.

The IGP’s remarks were directed not only at potential troublemakers but also at individuals who may be tempted by external influences to disrupt the electoral process. He warned against being used as tools for chaos, stressing the likelihood of abandonment by those instigating such acts once the law takes its course. “Don’t forget that the people who will lure you to create confusion will switch off their phones when you are arrested. They will simply abandon you,” he said, urging citizens to consider the consequences of their actions.

Dr. Dampare called on all Ghanaians to exercise their voting rights peacefully and to respect the democratic rights of others, emphasizing the importance of unity and national cohesion during this critical period. “We are fully prepared, and I can assure you that the elections will be peaceful,” he stated.

In addition to warning against misconduct, the IGP expressed confidence in the measures put in place by the police service to safeguard the electoral process. These include enhanced intelligence gathering, deployment of adequately trained officers, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to address potential risks before they escalate. He assured the public that every effort is being made to uphold law and order during the election period.

Dr. Dampare’s call for peaceful elections also underscored the importance of civic responsibility among voters. He reminded citizens that the power to shape the nation’s future lies in their hands and encouraged them to approach the polls with integrity and respect for the rule of law.

The commissioning of the new police station at Akyem-Manso served as a testament to the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to extending its presence and improving security across the country. Dr. Dampare noted that this expansion aligns with the broader goal of ensuring that every community is adequately served and protected. He urged residents of Akyem-Manso to take full advantage of the facility and support the police in maintaining peace and security in the area.

As the December elections draw near, the IGP’s firm stance against electoral misconduct has been widely applauded by various stakeholders. Political parties, civil society organizations, and members of the public have commended the Ghana Police Service for its proactive approach to maintaining peace and order. The assurance of a peaceful electoral process has been described as a critical step in safeguarding Ghana’s democratic credentials, which remain a beacon of hope in the region.

Dr. Dampare’s emphasis on collaboration and vigilance has resonated with many Ghanaians, who recognize the importance of a united effort to ensure free, fair, and credible elections. His message serves as a reminder that the success of the electoral process depends on the collective responsibility of all citizens, including voters, political parties, and security agencies.

In conclusion, the IGP’s warning against electoral misconduct underscores the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to upholding law and order as the December elections approach. Dr. Dampare’s assurance of peaceful polls, combined with the measures being implemented by the police service, provides Ghanaians with the confidence needed to participate in the democratic process without fear. By exercising their voting rights responsibly and supporting efforts to maintain peace, citizens can contribute to the integrity and success of the upcoming elections.
