The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced the schedule for the re-run of the parliamentary primary in the Walewale constituency. This follows a High Court ruling in Tamale that annulled the initial election, which was won by Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru. The court’s decision, issued on September 2, 2024, has paved the way for fresh nominations and a new electoral process.
According to a statement signed by the Party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on Monday, September 2, nominations for the re-run will be open from September 2 to September 5, 2024. The election is set to take place on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
Aspiring candidates interested in contesting the re-run are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of GHC 3,000 and a filing fee of GHC 35,000. However, special provisions have been made for women, youth, and persons with disabilities, who will receive a 50% discount on the filing fee. Additionally, candidates who participated in the initial primary are exempt from paying these fees.
To ensure a smooth and transparent electoral process, the NPP has formed an Election Committee chaired by Alhaji Haruna Mohammed, which will oversee the re-run of the election.
This re-run aims to resolve the dispute surrounding the initial primary and provide a fair opportunity for all candidates, ensuring that the final outcome represents the true choice of the constituency’s members.
