73 Officers Commissioned into the Ghana Armed Forces

Seventy-three officers from the Short Service Commission and Special Duties Intake 61 have been officially commissioned into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), marking the beginning of their careers in service to the nation.

These newly commissioned officers, drawn from diverse professional and academic backgrounds, have successfully completed an intensive six-month training programme at the Ghana Military Academy (GMA).

The training programme, which began in June, aimed to mould the cadets into disciplined and skilled officers capable of defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ghana. Through a rigorous blend of theoretical lessons and practical military exercises, the training prepared the officers to confront the challenges of modern military operations and leadership. Despite the demands of the programme, the officers displayed unwavering dedication and perseverance, embodying the values of discipline, sacrifice, and service.

The initial intake comprised 76 cadets, with 35 designated for the Army, 15 for the Navy, and 26 for the Air Force. However, three cadets were unable to complete the programme due to medical grounds, resulting in a final commissioning strength of 73.

During the graduation ceremony at the GMA, several outstanding cadets were recognised for their exemplary performance. Junior Under Officer Yaro Mohammed-Keilan was honoured with the prestigious Chief of Defence Staff Award, a testament to his leadership qualities and dedication throughout the training period. Cadet Sergeant Gyamfi Samuel Ameyaw received the Commandant Award, while Cadet Corporal Wuni Nadia Isabelle was celebrated with the Best Female Cadet Award for her exceptional achievements and contributions during the programme.

The ceremony, held with great pomp and pageantry, was reviewed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who commended the graduating cadets for their resilience and hard work. In his address, President Akufo-Addo expressed pride in the precision and discipline displayed by the graduates during the parade, describing their performance as inspiring and reflective of their commitment to excellence.

“Today, these fine cadets represent the enduring ethos of the GMA, and I am confident that their families, friends, and loved ones, whether present or afar, share in this moment of immense pride,” the President said.

President Akufo-Addo also acknowledged the enduring resilience of the Ghana Military Academy in producing officers who embody the values of duty, sacrifice, and service. Despite facing various challenges, the academy has consistently maintained its high standards, ensuring that Ghana’s armed forces remain vigilant and prepared to safeguard national peace and stability.

He took the opportunity to congratulate the acting Commandant of the GMA for upholding the institution’s reputation and standards, particularly amid competing national priorities. “Your efforts ensure that our armed forces remain vigilant and prepared to safeguard the peace and stability cherished by all Ghanaians,” the President added.

Turning his focus to broader security issues, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the dynamic and evolving security challenges facing the West African sub-region. He cited pressing threats such as environmental degradation caused by illegal mining and the southward spread of terrorism from the Sahel region. These issues, he noted, require proactive and comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and stability of the nation and its neighbors.

To address these challenges, President Akufo-Addo outlined his government’s commitment to strengthening the Ghana Armed Forces through progressive expansion and investment. Key initiatives include the establishment of Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in all 16 regions, aimed at enhancing rapid response capabilities and regional security. Additionally, significant investments have been made in equipment, logistics, and specialised units to modernise the armed forces and prepare them for diverse operational demands.

The President noted that these investments have yielded tangible advancements, such as the delivery of armoured personnel carriers, troop-carrying vehicles, surveillance equipment, offshore security vessels, and advanced aircraft. “These investments ensure our forces are well-equipped to address internal security challenges and regional threats while maintaining Ghana’s legacy in international peacekeeping,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo also reflected on Ghana’s long-standing contributions to global peacekeeping efforts, a tradition that dates back to 1960. He proudly noted that Ghana ranks as the sixth-largest troop-contributing nation to United Nations peace operations, with over 2,600 personnel deployed in conflict zones worldwide. This legacy, built on sacrifice and dedication, underscores Ghana’s commitment to promoting peace and security on the global stage.

Addressing the newly commissioned officers, President Akufo-Addo charged them to uphold this noble tradition and serve with integrity, vision, and courage. He urged them to carry the hopes and aspirations of the nation with them in their service and to exemplify the highest ideals of the Ghana Armed Forces in all their endeavors.

“As officers of the GAF, you will be called upon to serve with integrity, lead with vision, and inspire with courage. Carry the hopes and aspirations of our nation with you, and let your service reflect the highest ideals of our armed forces,” the President concluded.

The commissioning ceremony marked a significant milestone for the 73 officers as they embark on their military careers, ready to contribute to national security and uphold Ghana’s proud military heritage. It also served as a reminder of the critical role the armed forces play in safeguarding peace, stability, and democracy in Ghana and beyond.
