Kufuor Lauds Bawumia’s Policies as Key to Ghana’s Development

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has commended the policies of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, emphasizing their potential to accelerate national development.

Speaking at a mini rally in the Abuakwa South constituency on Wednesday, Kufuor urged Ghanaians to support Dr. Bawumia, describing his vision as a transformative one that will benefit the entire country.

“I have been paying attention. Bawumia’s policies, particularly his focus on training the youth in entrepreneurial and digital skills, are good. If you don’t want this, what do you want? So I plead with you, he is not just coming for the NPP but for the whole country,” the former president stated. He highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to building an inclusive government and alleviating the economic challenges faced by Ghanaians, adding, “I have listened to all those talking about their policies, but I haven’t seen anyone with policies as good as Bawumia’s.”

Kufuor’s endorsement has not come without controversy. Critics, including Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, flagbearer of the Movement for Change, have called on the former president to remain neutral due to his status as a respected statesman. Despite this, Kufuor has firmly defended his decision to publicly support Dr. Bawumia, stating that his experience and wisdom as a former leader give him the perspective to recognize strong leadership.

Addressing supporters at the Ofori Panin Palace during a campaign event on November 27, Kufuor stood by his endorsement of Dr. Bawumia and urged voters to back the NPP in the 2024 general elections. “I am facing criticism for voicing my opinions on national matters due to my position as a statesman. Experience and wisdom are often associated with age. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is my political affiliation, and it was through this party that I attained the presidency,” he explained.

Kufuor also expressed personal confidence in Dr. Bawumia, recalling his time as a member of the Bank of Ghana team during his administration. He praised Bawumia’s remarkable performance during a challenging period when Ghana was facing financial distress, crediting him and his team for playing a critical role in revitalizing the economy.

Kufuor’s public backing of Dr. Bawumia comes as the NPP intensifies its campaign to secure victory in the 2024 elections. The former president’s influential voice adds weight to the narrative that Dr. Bawumia’s policies and leadership style are essential for Ghana’s progress.

Kufuor reiterated that his support for Bawumia transcends party politics, emphasizing that the candidate’s policies are designed to uplift all Ghanaians. He highlighted Bawumia’s vision of an inclusive government, aimed at reducing hardship and fostering national development through innovative strategies such as digitalization and youth empowerment.

The former president’s appeal to voters reflects the urgency he attaches to the upcoming elections. “Dr. Bawumia is coming to serve the nation, not just the NPP. His leadership will ensure that every Ghanaian, regardless of political affiliation, feels the impact of positive change,” Kufuor remarked.

As the 2024 elections draw closer, Kufuor’s endorsement is likely to shape the narrative around the NPP’s campaign. His personal connection to Dr. Bawumia, combined with his legacy as a former president, lends credibility to his call for unity and support for the NPP’s presidential candidate.

At the heart of Kufuor’s message is a belief in the transformative power of leadership grounded in practical and inclusive policies. For the former president, Dr. Bawumia embodies the qualities needed to navigate Ghana through its current challenges and position the country for sustained development.

Kufuor’s rallying cry in Abuakwa South serves as a powerful endorsement of Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and vision for the future, signaling a strong show of support from one of the NPP’s most revered figures. As Ghanaians prepare to cast their votes, Kufuor’s message underscores the stakes of the election and the potential impact of Dr. Bawumia’s presidency on the nation’s trajectory.
