AFCON U-20 2025: Morocco Name Strong 26-Man Squad Ahead of Group Clash with Nigeria

As anticipation builds for the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON), Morocco has officially unveiled a competitive 26-man squad set to challenge for the title in Egypt. The team, announced by head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, includes a strategic mix of homegrown talents and promising Europe-based players.

The Atlas Cubs will compete in Group B alongside seven-time champions Nigeria and Kenya, and their roster announcement signals their readiness to make a deep run in the continental tournament.

Key European-Based Talents Lead Moroccan Squad

Among the most notable names on the list is Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, a highly rated central defender who plies his trade with Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais in France. Ait Boudlal is seen as a rising star within Morocco’s youth ranks and is expected to play a key role in stabilizing the team’s backline throughout the tournament.

Joining him is Julien Misbahi, a physically imposing centre-back from FC Twente in the Netherlands. Misbahi brings tactical awareness and ball-playing ability that will be crucial in navigating tough fixtures against formidable opponents like Nigeria.

These foreign-based stars add depth and international experience to a squad predominantly composed of standout players from Morocco’s top-tier domestic league, the Botola Pro 1.

Domestic Talent: Dahhak Headlines Local Contingent

On the domestic front, Mouad Dahhak of Union Touarga earns a deserved call-up after an impressive season. The young striker has been in top form in the Botola Pro 1, showcasing sharp finishing and consistent performances that caught the attention of the national selectors.

Coach Ouahbi, speaking during the squad announcement, expressed confidence in the blend of youth and experience his team carries into the tournament.

“We have selected a balanced team. The idea was to build a squad that reflects the future of Moroccan football, with players who are technically gifted and mentally prepared for the challenge ahead,” he said.

“Facing teams like Nigeria is never easy. They are a powerhouse at this level, but we believe in our abilities and are focused on progressing beyond the group stage.”

Tournament Schedule and Morocco’s Fixtures

Morocco kicks off their campaign on Thursday, May 1, against Kenya, in what is expected to be a decisive opening match. Kenya, returning to the competition after a lengthy absence, will be hoping to pull off a surprise, but the Atlas Cubs will enter the match as favourites.

Their second group stage fixture — arguably the most anticipated — comes on Sunday, May 4, when Morocco faces Nigeria, one of the tournament’s top contenders. The Flying Eagles, boasting seven U-20 AFCON titles, are widely regarded as one of Africa’s most consistent youth teams.

Morocco’s final group match will be against an opponent yet to be officially confirmed due to recent adjustments in the qualifying process, but the focus remains firmly on the early encounters.

Egypt to Host Tournament from April 27 to May 18

The 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations will be hosted by Egypt, with matches played across three cities from April 27 to May 18. The tournament also serves as a qualifier for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, with the top four teams earning automatic slots.

This year’s AFCON U-20 will not only showcase the continent’s best emerging talent but also serve as a scouting ground for top clubs globally. Morocco, like other leading nations, views the tournament as an opportunity to develop its next generation of senior internationals.

Nigeria-Morocco Showdown: A Battle of Youthful Giants

The clash between Nigeria and Morocco on May 4 is already generating excitement among football fans and analysts. Nigeria’s squad, yet to be formally announced, is expected to feature a number of stars from both the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and top academies in Europe.

Both countries have a strong track record in youth football and have faced off in past age-grade tournaments, often with dramatic outcomes. Morocco’s recent investment in youth development and infrastructure has seen them become a formidable force in CAF competitions.

“We know Nigeria’s history in this tournament,” Ouahbi added.
“But our boys are prepared. They know what’s at stake — not just national pride but a chance to shine on the international stage.”

Full Squad to Be Released by CAF Before Kickoff

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to release full tournament details, including final squad lists from all participating nations, in the coming week. Morocco’s announcement puts them among the early nations to have completed their squad registration, indicating strong logistical and tactical preparation.

With preparations in full swing and excitement mounting, the 2025 AFCON U-20 tournament is poised to deliver thrilling matches and showcase Africa’s next football superstars.
