Afua Asantewaa Completes Record-Breaking Singing Marathon

Afua Asantewaa O. Aduonum has achieved a historic milestone, completing 121 hours and 39 minutes of continuous singing in her second attempt to set the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest singing marathon by an individual. This remarkable feat, which captivated both local and international audiences, took place at the Heroes’ Park at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

The event was not just a personal accomplishment but a celebration of the rich tapestry of Ghanaian music and culture.

The marathon began in the early hours of December 21, 2024, and culminated on December 25, 2024, a day synonymous with joy and festivity. Over the grueling five-day period, the 34-year-old singer and media personality performed more than 200 songs, spanning a variety of Ghanaian music genres such as gospel, highlife, afrobeat, and hiplife. Her performance demonstrated not only her vocal endurance but also her deep commitment to promoting Ghana’s musical heritage on a global stage.

Afua Asantewaa reflected on her achievement with immense pride and fulfillment. “I am fulfilled considering the fact that I succeeded in promoting Ghanaian songs,” she said. For her, this was not just a personal challenge but a mission to shine a light on the beauty and diversity of Ghana’s musical culture. Her performance drew attention to the storytelling and unique rhythms that make Ghanaian music stand out in the global arena.

A feat of this magnitude was not accomplished alone. Afua Asantewaa emphasized the critical role of her dedicated team in her success. She expressed gratitude to her manager, Gladys Osei Owiredu; her husband and Head of Public Relations, Kofi Owusu Aduonum; and team members Fredrick Fosu, Kelvin Abban, and Isaac Amponsah, who handled operations and creative aspects of the event. “Of course, my team was instrumental in this journey,” she remarked. Their collective efforts ensured that every aspect of the event ran smoothly, from logistics to audience engagement.

This year’s attempt was Afua Asantewaa’s second bid for the Guinness World Record. In 2023, she sang for an impressive 126 hours, exceeding the existing record of 105 hours set by India’s Sunil Waghmare. However, due to technicalities, her effort was not officially recognized. Undeterred by this setback, Afua returned stronger, with meticulous planning and enhanced preparation to ensure that every guideline was followed to the letter.

The event attracted significant attention, with supporters thronging Heroes’ Park to cheer her on. Fans and well-wishers not only celebrated her vocal stamina but also admired her determination and resilience. Her marathon singing session became a beacon of inspiration for many, symbolizing the power of persistence and the importance of chasing one’s dreams despite obstacles.

Following the successful completion of the singing marathon, the next critical phase involves submitting evidence to Guinness World Records for review. This process requires detailed documentation, including continuous video recordings, witness statements, and performance logs, to verify that all stipulated guidelines were adhered to throughout the attempt. The meticulous submission process is essential to uphold the credibility and prestige associated with Guinness World Records.

Should her submission be validated, Afua Asantewaa will officially claim the coveted title and secure her place in history as a Guinness World Record holder. This recognition would not only be a personal triumph but also a significant achievement for Ghana, highlighting the nation’s rich cultural heritage and talent on a global platform.

Afua Asantewaa’s accomplishment resonates deeply with Ghanaians, as it underscores the resilience and creativity that define the nation’s people. Her ability to persevere through physical exhaustion and maintain her vocal strength for over 121 hours is a testament to her dedication and passion for music. It also serves as a reminder of the extraordinary heights that can be reached through determination, teamwork, and an unwavering belief in one’s abilities.

The event was more than just an attempt to break a record; it was a celebration of community and unity. Supporters who gathered at Heroes’ Park during the marathon represented a cross-section of Ghanaian society, coming together to witness and support a moment of history in the making. The energy and enthusiasm of the crowd were palpable, as they joined in singing and dancing to the melodies that filled the air.

Afua’s efforts also carried a deeper significance, as they aimed to promote Ghanaian music to a broader audience. By performing songs across various genres, she highlighted the versatility and richness of Ghanaian music, ensuring that it gained recognition beyond the country’s borders. Her accomplishment stands as a powerful statement about the role of artists in preserving and promoting cultural heritage.

As the world awaits the official confirmation of her record, Afua Asantewaa’s achievement already serves as a source of pride and inspiration. Her journey reminds us that setbacks are merely stepping stones to greater success. Whether or not her record is officially recognized, her efforts have already left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who witnessed her performance.

Afua Asantewaa’s marathon singing session is a testament to the enduring power of music to bring people together, inspire action, and celebrate cultural identity. It is a moment that will be remembered not just for its duration but for the passion, resilience, and spirit it represented.
