The Ahafo Regional Director of the (NADMO), Nana Adu Bonsu, has urged residents of the region to exercise heightened caution as the Christmas festivities coincide with the peak of the Harmattan season.
According to him, the Harmattan period is characterized by dry, dusty winds that significantly increase the risk of fire outbreaks, respiratory-related illnesses and road accidents. He therefore appealed to the general public to take preventive measures to safeguard lives and property during the season.
Nana Adu Bonsu stressed the need for the careful handling and proper maintenance of cooking gas cylinders, especially as families prepare meals for relatives and friends during the Christmas celebrations. He warned that negligence in the use of cooking appliances often leads to domestic fires, which can result in severe damage and loss of life.
He also appealed to both commercial and private drivers to exercise patience and discipline on the roads. “My humble plea to drivers is that they should drive carefully and strictly obey traffic regulations to prevent accidents,” he said. “Motorists must desist from over-speeding and unnecessary overtaking, as many roads become extremely busy due to the Christmas rush.”
The Regional Director further cautioned organizers of Christmas events, end-of-year parties and social gatherings to put in place adequate safety measures. He advised event organizers to avoid overcrowding, noting that large crowds can easily become uncontrollable, leading to trampling, injuries and suffocation.
In addition, Nana Adu Bonsu warned farmers and hunters against the use of fire during the Harmattan season. He explained that bush burning at this time poses a serious threat to farmlands, communities and forest reserves, as fires can spread rapidly due to the dry weather conditions.
He concluded by urging the public to cooperate with safety agencies and report any potential hazards promptly, emphasizing that collective responsibility is key to ensuring a safe and peaceful Christmas celebration in the Ahafo Region.
