The much-anticipated OMJ SoccerFest 2025 has been officially launched in a colourful and high-spirited ceremony at the Arrow Events and Pub Annexe in Aburi, Eastern Region. Held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, the launch marked the beginning of what promises to be one of the most exciting football events in the Akuapem South Municipality.
Now in its third edition, OMJ SoccerFest continues under the compelling theme: “Harnessing Talents for a Sustainable National Development.” The initiative, spearheaded by the OMJ Foundation, is more than just a football tournament—it is a movement aimed at empowering young footballers in local communities and providing them with a platform to showcase their talents.
A Vision Beyond the Pitch
OMJ SoccerFest is the brainchild of Mr. Osei Mensah Joseph, Founder and CEO of the OMJ Foundation. His vision stems from a personal journey rooted in perseverance and a commitment to give back to society. Addressing the gathering at the launch, Mr. Osei shared the challenges he faced growing up and urged others to support the vulnerable in any way they can.
“You can help with your little. Don’t wait to be excessively rich before you start,” he said passionately. “Our foundation is established with a clear purpose: to positively impact generations through the act of giving back to society.”
Expanding Impact Across Communities
The SoccerFest was launched in 2023 with six participating towns. In 2024, the competition expanded to include 12 teams. This year, the third edition is set to break new ground with 24 towns participating, covering virtually the entire Akuapem South enclave.
The zonal qualifiers were held during the first weekend of June 2025. After fiercely contested matches, 12 towns successfully secured their place in the finals, scheduled to be hosted in Obodan.
Group stage draws for the tournament were also announced during the launch:
- Group A: Obodan (host), Dago, Ahwerase
- Group B: Konkonuru (two-time champions), Kitase, Gyankama
- Group C: Obotweri, Aburi, Nsakye
- Group D: Oboadaka, Pokrom, Kwame Ntow
All eyes are on Konkonuru, the reigning champions, who will be looking to defend their title and maintain their dominance.
Community Leaders and Stakeholders Rally Behind the Project
The event drew an impressive array of stakeholders from the world of sports, local governance, and community leadership. Among the distinguished guests was Mr. Kenneth Boakye, Chairman of the Akuapem South District Football Association (FA), who praised the organisers for their consistent efforts in uplifting grassroots football.
In his keynote address, Mr. Boakye underscored the importance of such platforms in shaping the future of Ghanaian football. “This tournament will leave a lasting impact on the youth. We need more like-minded individuals like Mr. Osei Mensah Joseph to help unlock and nurture the immense football talent across our communities,” he remarked.
Life-Changing Opportunities and Exciting Awards
One of the biggest highlights of this year’s SoccerFest is the promise of life-changing opportunities for outstanding players. Mr. Osei revealed that the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) will earn the chance to travel to Turkey to further their football career. The announcement was met with loud applause and excitement.
Other awards include:
- Trophy for the winning team
- Medals for finalists
- Sets of jerseys and football boots
- Cash prizes
- Individual honours such as Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender, Top Scorer, and Best Midfielder
Cooking Competition: A Cultural Addition
Adding an exciting new twist to the event, OMJ SoccerFest 2025 will for the first time host a traditional cooking competition for women. Six towns have been paired into three groups, and contestants will engage in a battle of culinary skills, preparing beloved traditional Akuapem dishes. The winning team will receive attractive prizes as part of the foundation’s commitment to celebrating culture and empowering women.
Looking Ahead to the Grand Finale
The OMJ SoccerFest 2025 grand event is scheduled for August 2nd and 3rd, 2025, with activities commencing from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day. Organisers are inviting everyone across Ghana and beyond to come and witness what is shaping up to be one of the most remarkable sporting events in the Eastern Region.
With growing support from local leaders, football associations, and community members, OMJ SoccerFest is fast becoming a beacon of hope and opportunity for young footballers. The project not only highlights the abundant talent within local communities but also exemplifies how sports can serve as a catalyst for social development and national unity.
A Platform with Purpose
As the OMJ Foundation continues to expand its impact, Mr. Osei Mensah Joseph reaffirmed his long-term commitment to using football as a tool for transformation.
“OMJ SoccerFest has come to stay,” he declared. “We will continue to use this platform to inspire, uplift, and transform the lives of our youth.”
Indeed, OMJ SoccerFest is not just about goals and trophies—it is about creating pathways to success, fostering unity, and building a future where talent meets opportunity.
