Ghana’s newly appointed Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, His Excellency Samuel Yao Kumah, has officially assumed his duties following the presentation of his Letters of Credence to the UN Secretary-General, H.E. António Guterres, on Friday, 14th November 2025, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
At the brief but significant ceremony, Ambassador Kumah conveyed warm fraternal greetings from the President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, to the Secretary-General. He reaffirmed Ghana’s long-standing dedication to multilateral cooperation and the core principles of the United Nations Charter.
Ambassador Kumah emphasized Ghana’s readiness to continue working closely with the United Nations and its Member States in the pursuit of international peace and security, sustainable development, and the promotion and protection of human rights.
He also commended Secretary-General Guterres for his exceptional leadership, especially amid a period of heightened geopolitical tensions. Highlighting the importance of the Secretary-General’s UN80 Initiative, Ambassador Kumah described it as “one of the most consequential efforts to reposition the United Nations to effectively address the complex challenges of our world today.”
He assured the Secretary-General of his full commitment to supporting the work of the Organization and advancing the goals of the UN Charter, adding that he looked forward to contributing meaningfully to ongoing global efforts for peace, development, and human dignity.
In response, Secretary-General António Guterres praised Ghana as “a steadfast partner of the United Nations and a pillar of multilateralism.” He commended the country’s longstanding cooperation with the UN across peacekeeping, development, governance, and human rights.
Mr. Guterres also acknowledged Ghana’s vibrant democratic credentials, its commitment to good governance, and its leadership role in confronting regional challenges in West Africa and the Sahel. He expressed confidence that Ambassador Kumah’s tenure would deepen the already strong partnership between Ghana and the United Nations.
The Secretary-General further described Ghana as a key member of the United Nations, expressing optimism that Ambassador Kumah would represent Ghana with distinction while also serving as a strong advocate for Africa on the global stage. On Friday, 14th November 2025, His Excellency Samuel Yao Kumah formally presented his Letters of Credence as Ghana’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations to the Secretary-General, H.E.
