Ayew Makes Competitive Return with NAC Breda

Andre Ayew, Ghana’s most capped international footballer, has taken a significant step back into competitive action after making his official debut for NAC Breda in a hard-fought 0-0 draw away to FC Groningen in the Dutch Eredivisie.
The round 18 encounter, played at the Euroborg Stadium, was closely contested from start to finish, with both sides showing urgency but struggling to find a breakthrough.

Ayew was introduced in the 57th minute, replacing French youngster Moussa Soumano, as NAC Breda sought additional experience and attacking composure in the latter stages of the match.

Ayew’s appearance marked the end of a prolonged absence from competitive football, with the veteran forward having last featured in an official match in May 2025. His return was therefore keenly watched, not only by NAC Breda supporters but also by Ghanaian football fans eager to see one of the country’s most decorated players back on the pitch.

At 36 years old, Ayew recently signed a short-term contract with NAC Breda, which includes an option for extension, following several weeks of training and assessment with the club.

The move was seen as mutually beneficial, offering NAC experience and leadership while giving Ayew the platform to rebuild match fitness and competitive sharpness.
Despite limited preparation time, the former Ghana captain delivered a disciplined and encouraging performance during his 33-minute cameo. He recorded 20 touches, registered one shot, completed a successful dribble, and won several ground and aerial duels. His movement off the ball, awareness in tight spaces, and ability to retain possession under pressure added stability to NAC Breda’s attacking play during a tense final phase of the match.

Ayew’s influence went beyond statistics, as his presence appeared to calm his teammates and provide a focal point in advanced positions. While NAC Breda were unable to break the deadlock, the team showed improved attacking intent after his introduction, underlining the value of his experience at this critical stage of the season.

The match also featured a notable Ghanaian presence, with Ayew sharing the pitch with fellow countrymen Denis Odoi and Kamal Sowah, both representing NAC Breda. The trio’s involvement added an extra layer of interest for Ghanaian fans and highlighted the growing footprint of Ghanaian players within Dutch football.

For NAC Breda, the draw represents another hard-earned point in what has been a challenging Eredivisie campaign. The club currently sits 17th on the league table with 14 points after 18 matches, remaining firmly in the relegation zone. While defensive resilience has improved in recent weeks, the team continues to struggle for goals, making experienced attacking options like Ayew crucial to their survival hopes.

Head coach and technical staff are expected to carefully manage Ayew’s minutes in the coming weeks as he continues to regain full match fitness. The immediate focus now shifts to NAC Breda’s next fixture, a crucial home clash against NEC Nijmegen at the Rat Verlegh Stadion. The encounter presents an opportunity for the Yellow-Blacks to claim vital points and potentially see Ayew earn more minutes or even a first start.

Beyond club football, Ayew’s return carries wider significance for Ghana’s national team. As the Black Stars look ahead to upcoming international commitments and the long-term goal of qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the experienced forward’s availability and form could prove valuable. Ayew remains one of Ghana’s most accomplished players, boasting extensive international experience, leadership qualities, and a proven track record on major stages.

While competition for places in the Black Stars setup has intensified in recent years, Ayew’s professionalism and determination to return to competitive football underline his desire to remain relevant at the highest level. A consistent run of games with NAC Breda could place him back in contention for national selection, particularly as Ghana seeks a blend of youth and experience.

For now, the focus remains on steady progress. Ayew’s debut, though brief, represents a positive first step in his comeback journey. As NAC Breda battle to secure their Eredivisie status, the club will be hoping that the former Ghana captain’s experience, leadership, and attacking intelligence can play a decisive role in the months ahead.
