Barker-Vormawor Denies Being in Hiding, Calls Police Allegations Baseless

The convener of the Democracy Hub protest, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has strongly denied allegations that he is in hiding and has been declared wanted by the police. He labelled the claims as “baseless and misleading,” clarifying that he has been in regular communication with senior police officers regarding his location and availability. This comes after several members of the Democracy Hub group were arrested on Sunday, September 22, following their participation in a protest.

According to the police, a manhunt had been launched to apprehend Barker-Vormawor and other individuals accused of participating in acts of lawlessness during the demonstration. However, Barker-Vormawor quickly refuted these accusations, stating that there is no basis for such a manhunt, as he had consistently been in contact with the relevant authorities.

In a Facebook post, Barker-Vormawor dismissed the police’s statement, expressing that he is not evading the law. “I have been in consistent communication with senior officers within the Police hierarchy regarding my whereabouts and availability,” he said, further indicating that he had no intention of going into hiding or avoiding legal responsibilities.

Barker-Vormawor emphasized that his legal team is prepared to cooperate fully with the police. His team has already been in contact with the necessary authorities to determine the next steps. He mentioned that his lawyers are ready to engage with the Ghana Police Service to clarify where and when he is expected to report for any further actions or inquiries. His goal, he explained, is to ensure that all matters are handled in a lawful manner, preventing any further spread of misinformation.

The Democracy Hub protest had gained significant attention due to its call for greater transparency and accountability in governance. However, the subsequent arrests of several protesters have raised concerns about the government’s stance on public demonstrations and free speech. Barker-Vormawor, known for his activism and vocal criticism of certain policies, has been at the forefront of the movement, calling for reforms in various sectors.

In light of the police’s statement, Barker-Vormawor reiterated his commitment to the rule of law and expressed confidence in the legal process. “My legal team stands ready to cooperate and will be in touch with the relevant authorities to ascertain the appropriate steps required,” he affirmed in his post.

He also stressed the importance of addressing the issues raised by the police through appropriate legal channels, adding that he believes in resolving such matters in accordance with due process. Barker-Vormawor expressed hope that the engagement with the police would provide clarity and prevent any further distortions of the truth.

This incident has drawn attention to the broader concerns surrounding the relationship between civil society groups and law enforcement in Ghana. While the Democracy Hub protest was meant to be a peaceful demonstration aimed at holding the government accountable, the subsequent actions taken by the police have sparked debate over the right to protest and freedom of expression.

Barker-Vormawor has previously been involved in activism and advocacy, often speaking out on issues related to democracy, governance, and human rights. His refusal to go into hiding and his immediate response to the police’s claims demonstrate his determination to continue pushing for reforms through legal means.

As the situation unfolds, many are closely watching how both the police and Barker-Vormawor’s legal team will proceed. The case has already captured public attention, and it could have significant implications for future protests and civil activism in the country.

In his Facebook post, Barker-Vormawor maintained that he remains fully committed to addressing any concerns raised by the police. “I expect that this engagement will provide clarity and prevent any further attempts to distort the truth,” he concluded.

With tensions high and many questions still unanswered, it remains to be seen how the matter will be resolved. For now, Barker-Vormawor stands firm in his position, insisting that the allegations against him are unfounded and that he is ready to cooperate with the authorities to ensure the truth is upheld.

As of now, the Ghana Police Service has not issued any further statements in response to Barker-Vormawor’s clarification, and the public awaits the outcome of the ongoing discussions between his legal team and the police.

This development highlights the challenges faced by activists and civil society groups in navigating the legal landscape while advocating for change. Barker-Vormawor’s stance indicates his resolve to see the matter through, remaining hopeful that a resolution will be reached in accordance with the principles of justice and fairness.
