The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has organised an extensive preparation course for referees selected to officiate at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. The initiative, held earlier this month in Cairo, Egypt, brought together referees, assistant referees, Video Assistant Referee (VAR) officials, and both technical and physical instructors under the close supervision of the CAF Referees Committee.
The course was designed to ensure that all match officials are fully equipped and ready for the tournament, which is scheduled to run from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026. Officials participated in a structured programme covering essential areas, including physical assessments, video match analysis, and simulation exercises aimed at improving decision-making, communication, and the consistent interpretation of the Laws of the Game.
A major focus of the training was the use of VAR technology, reflecting CAF’s commitment to aligning officiating with modern football standards. Participants received updated guidance in accordance with CAF and FIFA protocols, ensuring a consistent and high-quality application of video assistance throughout the competition. This emphasis on technology also aims to minimise errors on the field and enhance transparency during matches, thereby contributing to the credibility and fairness of the tournament.
CAF officials highlighted that the preparation course forms part of the organisation’s broader strategy to elevate refereeing standards across Africa. By prioritising excellence, CAF seeks to develop officials capable of managing matches at the highest level, ensuring that refereeing decisions are accurate, impartial, and in line with international best practices.
The programme in Cairo provided referees with opportunities to engage in interactive sessions, practical exercises, and scenario-based simulations. These activities are designed to test both the technical and mental readiness of officials, ensuring they can perform effectively under pressure during the intense environment of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Physical conditioning was also a critical component of the training, with officials undergoing rigorous fitness assessments to ensure they meet the demands of high-intensity matches. CAF emphasised that the combination of physical, technical, and psychological preparation is essential for producing referees who can maintain focus and make sound decisions throughout the tournament.
In addition to technical and fitness training, the course promoted communication and teamwork among officials. Effective collaboration between referees, assistant referees, and VAR teams is vital for maintaining control of matches and ensuring that rules are consistently applied. CAF encouraged officials to cultivate a strong sense of cohesion and mutual understanding to deliver high-quality officiating during the tournament.
The focus on VAR technology also included practical demonstrations and real-time video analysis. Participants studied previous match situations and engaged in exercises designed to simulate live match conditions. This approach aims to enhance officials’ ability to interpret incidents quickly and accurately, while applying VAR protocols uniformly in line with international standards.
CAF’s ongoing commitment to referee development reflects a wider goal of promoting transparency, credibility, and fairness across African football. Officials have noted that improving refereeing standards is central to enhancing the quality of competitions and fostering trust among players, coaches, and fans. By investing in education and training, CAF is working to ensure that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will be managed by highly competent officials who can contribute to a successful and well-regulated tournament.
The 2025 AFCON in Morocco promises to be a showcase of top-tier African football, featuring competitive matches and heightened attention from global audiences. CAF’s preparatory course for referees underscores the importance of strong officiating in shaping the integrity and overall success of the event. By equipping referees with the tools, knowledge, and skills needed to handle the pressures of high-profile matches, the confederation is taking proactive steps to guarantee a fair and memorable tournament for all participants.
CAF concluded that the comprehensive course in Cairo demonstrates the organisation’s dedication to continuous improvement and capacity building. With referees now fully prepared, the focus can shift to the excitement and anticipation surrounding AFCON 2025 in Morocco, where Africa’s best national teams will compete for continental glory.
