Chelle names 23-man Super Eagles squad for Iran and Jordan friendlies

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has named a 23-man squad for Nigeria’s upcoming international friendly matches against Iran and Jordan, as preparations continue ahead of future competitive fixtures.

The selected squad features a blend of experienced internationals and emerging talents, with team captain Wilfred Ndidi, midfield playmaker Alex Iwobi, and in-form forward Ademola Lookman all included. The list reflects Chelle’s intent to maintain a strong core while also assessing new options within the team.

Originally scheduled to be played in Amman, Jordan, the matches have been relocated to Antalya, Turkey, following escalating military tensions in parts of the Middle East. The change in venue ensures the fixtures proceed under stable and secure conditions.

Nigeria will take on Iran on March 27 at 4pm local time, before facing Jordan on March 31 at 8pm. Both matches are expected to provide valuable opportunities for tactical experimentation and squad evaluation.

Chelle’s squad includes key players across all departments. In goal, Maduka Okoye returns alongside Adebayo Adeleye and Francis Uzoho, offering a mix of experience and competition for the starting position. Okoye, who has been a regular presence in recent call-ups, is expected to play a leading role between the posts.

In defence, the coach has called on a combination of established and emerging players. Calvin Bassey, Oluwasemilogo Ajayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Zaidu Sanusi headline the defensive lineup, bringing both international experience and versatility. They are joined by Bruno Onyemaechi, Igoh Ogbu, and Scotland-based Emmanuel Fernandez, who receives his first senior national team invitation.

Fernandez’s inclusion marks one of the notable highlights of the squad announcement. His call-up signals Chelle’s willingness to integrate new talent into the team, particularly players who have been performing consistently at club level.

The midfield unit is anchored by Wilfred Ndidi, whose leadership and defensive capabilities remain crucial to the team’s structure. Alex Iwobi, known for his creativity and attacking contributions, adds balance and flair to the midfield setup.

They are supported by Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, all of whom bring energy, discipline, and tactical flexibility. This combination provides Chelle with multiple options in shaping his midfield approach across both fixtures.

In attack, the Super Eagles boast a strong lineup featuring Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, and Moses Simon, all of whom have been key performers for the national team in recent years. Their pace, creativity, and goal-scoring ability are expected to play a central role in Nigeria’s attacking strategy.

Additional forward options include Paul Onuachu, Akor Adams, and Chidera Ejuke, offering a mix of physical presence, technical skill, and versatility in the final third. Germany-based Philip Otele and Belgium-based Collins Yira Sor have also been included, further strengthening the attacking depth.

The return of Adebayo Adeleye to the squad adds further competition in the goalkeeping department, while the inclusion of younger and less experienced players reflects a broader effort to build depth within the team.

Chelle’s selection comes at a time when the Super Eagles are looking to refine their tactical identity and build cohesion ahead of important international competitions. The friendlies are expected to serve as a testing ground for new combinations and strategies.

Football analysts have noted that such matches are critical for assessing player form, fitness, and adaptability. They also provide an opportunity for coaching staff to evaluate how new players integrate into the team’s system.

The relocation of the matches to Turkey underscores the importance of flexibility in international football scheduling. With global events and security concerns often affecting fixtures, teams must be prepared to adapt while maintaining focus on performance.

For Nigeria, the games against Iran and Jordan present a chance to strengthen team chemistry and identify areas for improvement. Both opponents are expected to provide competitive challenges, offering valuable insights into the team’s readiness.

Chelle is expected to use the fixtures to experiment with formations and player roles, particularly in midfield and attack. The presence of both experienced players and newcomers creates a dynamic environment for evaluation.

The inclusion of first-time call-ups alongside established internationals also highlights the ongoing transition within the Super Eagles squad. As older players continue to provide leadership, younger talents are being introduced to ensure continuity and long-term development.

The full squad reflects a careful balance between maintaining stability and embracing change, a strategy that is essential for sustained success in international football.

As the Super Eagles prepare for the friendlies, attention will be on how the team performs collectively and how individual players seize their opportunities. Strong performances could influence future selections and shape the team’s direction moving forward.

The matches in Antalya are expected to attract significant interest from fans and analysts alike, as Nigeria continues to build momentum ahead of upcoming competitive engagements.

With a talented squad and a clear focus on development, the Super Eagles will aim to deliver convincing performances and strengthen their position as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
