Diaspora Investment Key to Unlocking Ghana’s Real Estate Potential – Kofi Darko

Kofi Okyere Darko, Director of the Diaspora Affairs Office, has emphasized the urgent need to address longstanding challenges in Ghana’s real estate sector in order to unlock the full potential of diaspora investment.

Speaking at the 3rd Ghana Property and Lifestyle Expo, Darko described housing as a fundamental pillar of national development, noting that “adequate housing is the indispensable gateway to all other human rights; it is the sacred ground upon which personal dignity is restored, communal stability is anchored, and a family’s future is permanently secured.”

He outlined five major obstacles hindering the growth of Ghana’s real estate sector: land tenure insecurity, fragmented regulatory systems, limited access to affordable financing, infrastructure deficits, and a growing trust gap between investors and developers.

According to Darko, the John Mahama Administration is determined to confront these challenges through practical, coordinated, and sustainable reforms aimed at restoring investor confidence and strengthening institutional frameworks.

He further highlighted the strategic importance of the Ghanaian diaspora to national development, stressing that diaspora investors bring more than just capital. “The Ghanaian diaspora brings patient capital, global standards, professional expertise, and a deep commitment to nation-building,” he said.

Darko called on development partners to prioritise long-term value creation rather than short-term gains, while urging financial institutions to design innovative and flexible financing products tailored to the needs of diaspora investors.

He described property ownership as a vital pathway for reconnecting Ghanaians abroad to their roots, stating that “property ownership is one of the strongest anchors for diaspora reintegration.” He encouraged Ghanaians in the diaspora to see real estate investment not only as a financial decision but as a contribution to national growth.

Commending the organisers of the Ghana Property and Lifestyle Expo, Darko noted that the initiative plays a critical role in promoting Ghana as a trusted destination for real estate investment and fostering collaboration among key stakeholders.

“Let us move from hesitation to confidence, from fragmented systems to coordinated solutions, and from obstacles to opportunity,” he urged.

The Ghana Property and Lifestyle Expo continues to serve as a key platform for connecting developers, investors, policymakers, and members of the diaspora, while showcasing investment opportunities within Ghana’s evolving real estate landscape.
