Dominican Republic Nightclub Roof Collapse Kills 218: Search for Victims Continues

No survivors found since Tuesday as recovery teams comb through rubble at iconic Jet Set nightclub; cause of disaster still unknown.

SANTO DOMINGO — The death toll from the catastrophic roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in the Dominican Republic has climbed to 218, with rescue crews continuing to search the debris for possible victims.

The tragedy unfolded late Monday night during a high-profile event at the famed Santo Domingo venue, which was packed with musicians, professional athletes, celebrities, and government officials. What began as a night of celebration turned into one of the deadliest structural disasters in the country’s recent history.

Emergency officials confirmed on Wednesday morning that no additional survivors have been pulled from the rubble since Tuesday afternoon. Dozens of first responders remain at the scene, assisted by specialized search teams and K9 units, as they race against time in the hope of finding anyone still alive.

“This is a national tragedy,” said President Luis Abinader during a press briefing. “We mourn the loss of so many lives and are committed to ensuring that a thorough investigation takes place once rescue operations are complete.”

Witnesses Describe Moment of Collapse

According to eyewitness accounts, the warning signs came just minutes before the ceiling gave way. “Dust started falling into our drinks, and people looked up, confused,” said Carlos Jiménez, a local artist who escaped unscathed. “Then we heard a crack, and suddenly the entire roof collapsed. It was chaos.”

Dozens were reportedly trapped under the debris as panicked guests attempted to flee. The popular venue, known for hosting international acts and political events, was operating at full capacity for a special live performance that drew over 500 attendees.

Authorities received more than 100 emergency calls in the moments after the collapse. Some of those calls came from individuals trapped under the wreckage, including staff and performers.

Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts

Police units were on the scene within 90 seconds, according to National Police Commissioner Eduardo Then. “Our officers were nearby providing security for the event and responded immediately,” he said. Firefighters and medical teams followed closely behind, coordinating efforts to extract victims from the mangled structure.

By Tuesday evening, over 120 bodies had been recovered, with the death toll climbing steadily as crews worked into the night. By Wednesday morning, that number had reached 218, with dozens more injured.

“Every hour counts,” said Juan Méndez, head of the Dominican Emergency Operations Center. “We are still holding out hope, but the likelihood of survival is decreasing.”

Méndez confirmed that all nearby hospitals have been placed on high alert, with trauma centers operating at full capacity. Some victims remain in critical condition, and authorities warn that the death toll could rise further.

Government Pledges Investigation

The exact cause of the roof collapse remains unclear. Structural engineers have yet to conduct a formal assessment of the building, which will not begin until the search and recovery phase is completed.

Public Works Minister Deligne Ascención Burgos stated that Jet Set had passed its last safety inspection in early 2023. “There were no reported structural issues at the time,” he said. “However, we will be reviewing all documentation and inspection records thoroughly.”

A national task force has been assembled to lead the investigation, which will include officials from the ministries of justice, infrastructure, and public safety. President Abinader emphasized that accountability will be a priority. “If negligence or corruption played any role in this tragedy, there will be consequences,” he said.

Cultural Landmark Now a Scene of Mourning

Jet Set nightclub, a cultural icon in the Dominican Republic, has operated for more than four decades. The venue has hosted everyone from global music stars to heads of state, and it holds a special place in the country’s entertainment history.

Outside the wreckage, grieving relatives and stunned fans gathered to leave flowers, light candles, and share memories. “This place was like home for so many of us,” said Maria Castillo, a longtime patron. “It’s heartbreaking to see it end this way.”

Prominent figures from the Dominican music and sports communities have expressed their condolences, including international baseball star Fernando Tatis Jr. and singer Juan Luis Guerra, both of whom had previously performed at the venue.

International Support and Condolences

Messages of sympathy have poured in from across Latin America and beyond. The Organization of American States (OAS) issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and solidarity with the Dominican people.

U.S. Ambassador Robert W. Thomas also offered condolences, calling the event “a tragic loss of life” and pledging assistance if needed. “Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the heroic first responders who continue the rescue efforts,” he said.

Looking Ahead

In the wake of the tragedy, the Dominican government has announced a temporary shutdown of all large entertainment venues for emergency safety reviews. Nationwide inspections will be carried out over the next 30 days to identify any structural vulnerabilities.

“We owe it to the victims to ensure this never happens again,” said Minister Burgos.

As night falls over the capital once again, search teams remain on-site, combing through the shattered remains of what was once a symbol of Dominican culture and nightlife. The work is slow, difficult, and dangerous—but authorities say they will not stop until every victim is accounted for.
