Former Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has expressed deep sorrow following the untimely death of Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, describing the loss as a devastating blow to Ghana’s democracy and a personal tragedy for himself and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The former Education Minister, in a moving statement sighted by Africa Live News on Monday, July 7, 2025, paid glowing tribute to the late lawmaker, calling him “a visionary leader, a patriot, and a dear friend” whose life was marked by humility, passion, and service to others.
“With deep sorrow, I mourn the passing of Hon. Ernest Kumi, MP for Akwatia—a dedicated patriot, visionary leader, and dear friend,” Dr. Adutwum wrote. “His passion, humility, and bold leadership touched many. Ghana has lost a rising star.”
Dr. Adutwum, who served in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration, said the late MP embodied the next generation of progressive leaders whose selfless contributions were beginning to reshape the future of Ghana. According to him, Hon. Kumi had become a voice of reason in Parliament and had earned the respect of colleagues on both sides of the aisle due to his calm demeanor, articulate delivery, and unwavering commitment to his constituents.
“His energy and resolve to serve the people of Akwatia with integrity and compassion was truly inspiring,” Dr. Adutwum emphasized. “He had a unique gift of connecting with people from all walks of life. His leadership style, rooted in humility and service, will be deeply missed.”
The former Minister further extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the chiefs and people of Akwatia, and the entire NPP fraternity, praying for strength and comfort in this difficult period.
“My deepest condolences to his family, the people of Akwatia, and our Party. May his soul rest peacefully in the bosom of our Lord,” he concluded.
The passing of Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi has sent shockwaves across the political landscape, particularly within the NPP, where he was regarded as one of the party’s most promising young lawmakers. He was known for his strong advocacy for education, youth empowerment, infrastructure development, and health care access for rural communities.
As the sitting MP for Akwatia, Hon. Kumi had initiated several development projects aimed at improving livelihoods within the constituency. He had championed the rehabilitation of schools, the construction of community health centers, and the creation of job opportunities for youth, especially in the mining communities of the Eastern Region. His efforts, many say, were beginning to yield tangible results, making his sudden passing even more painful for those who supported his vision.
In Parliament, Hon. Kumi served on the Youth, Sports and Culture Committee as well as the Public Accounts Committee, where he was recognized for his diligence and constructive contributions during debates and hearings. His colleagues often described him as thoughtful, disciplined, and passionate about accountability.
“Hon. Kumi was a gentleman, a true democrat, and someone who had great promise,” said a fellow MP who requested anonymity. “It is rare to find someone who combines intellect, humility, and a heart for the people the way he did. This is a loss for all of us.”
Constituents in Akwatia have also been left devastated by the news. Several residents who spoke with Africa Live News described the MP as accessible, empathetic, and deeply rooted in the affairs of his community. Many recalled his frequent unannounced visits to remote villages to listen to their concerns and provide direct support.
“Ernest was not just an MP; he was a brother to all of us,” said Madam Adwoa Bempomaa, a market woman in Akwatia. “He came here many times to help us improve our stalls and sanitation. We can’t believe he’s gone. He had so many dreams for us.”
Before venturing into politics, Ernest Yaw Kumi had a solid background in policy, administration, and community development. He held a Master’s degree in Development Management and worked with several local and international organizations on poverty reduction and youth capacity-building initiatives.
He made his debut in Parliament after winning the Akwatia seat on the ticket of the NPP in the 2024 general elections. His victory was seen as a major gain for the party, as he flipped a key swing constituency previously held by the opposition. His campaign had focused on transparency, people-centered development, and accountable leadership—a message that resonated strongly with voters.
The NPP National Executive Committee is expected to issue an official statement in the coming days, and preparations for his funeral are already underway in consultation with his family, traditional leaders, and constituency executives.
Hon. Kumi’s passing comes at a time when the NPP is preparing for its internal parliamentary primaries and national delegates’ conference. His death will undoubtedly impact strategic decisions within the Eastern Region and is expected to draw high-level attention from party leadership and government officials.
As tributes continue to pour in from across the country, it is evident that Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi left a lasting impression not only as a public servant but as a symbol of hope for many young Ghanaians aspiring to lead with integrity and purpose.
Africa Live News will continue to monitor updates on funeral arrangements and pay tribute to the life and service of this exceptional young legislator.
