ECG Managing Director Samuel Dubik Mahama Resigns After Two Years of Service

Samuel Dubik Mahama, the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has officially resigned from his position, according to reliable sources from Citi News. In a letter addressed to the Board Chairman of ECG, Mahama cited personal reasons as the driving force behind his decision to step down from his role.

His resignation, which takes effect two weeks from the date of his notice, has caught many in the energy sector by surprise, as Mahama had served in the position for just over two years.

In his resignation letter, Mahama expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities and support he received during his tenure at ECG. “I am writing to formally resign from my position as Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana, effective two weeks from the above date. The decision has not come easily, but after much reflection, I have concluded that it is in my best interest to step away for personal reasons,” Mahama explained.

He further highlighted the honor it was for him to serve the organization and thanked both the Board and the President for their trust and guidance during his time as Managing Director. “Over the past two years and four months, I have had the profound honour of serving this esteemed organisation, and I am truly grateful for the opportunities I have received. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Board for your unwavering support and guidance throughout my tenure. I also wish to express my sincere gratitude to the President for the trust placed in me, which has been a significant aspect of my journey here,” he added.

Samuel Dubik Mahama’s resignation has raised questions across the energy sector, with many speculating on the reasons behind his departure, although neither ECG nor government officials have provided further details on the situation.

Appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Mahama officially assumed his role as Managing Director on May 16, 2022. His leadership of ECG was closely watched, given the challenges in Ghana’s energy sector and the expectations placed on him to drive improvements in the country’s electricity distribution network.

Despite the sudden nature of his resignation, Mahama leaves behind a legacy of leadership at ECG. Prior to his role as Managing Director, he served as a non-executive director at the company, bringing with him a wealth of experience from both the public and private sectors. His background includes serving as a non-executive director at GIHOC Distilleries, as well as being the country representative for Gulfsouth Forest Products. He also held positions as a partner at Dubik & Associates and Wilkins Engineering, demonstrating his extensive involvement in business and engineering.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mahama is a trained legal practitioner and a proud graduate of the University of Ghana. His multifaceted career has spanned industries such as engineering, business management, and law, making him a well-rounded figure in Ghana’s corporate world.

Mahama’s departure leaves ECG at a critical moment. His leadership had been instrumental in navigating various operational challenges and fostering collaboration between ECG and other stakeholders within the energy sector. As the company looks to the future, questions remain about who will step into Mahama’s shoes and lead the company forward.

With energy distribution being a key issue for the development of Ghana’s economy, the role of ECG’s Managing Director carries significant responsibility. Mahama’s successor will likely face similar challenges, such as addressing operational inefficiencies, improving revenue collection, and ensuring stable electricity supply to both commercial and residential customers across the country.

As the energy sector awaits more information regarding Mahama’s resignation and the future direction of ECG, his contribution during his time at the helm of the company will undoubtedly be remembered. His resignation may open the door for fresh leadership to steer the company into the future, but his influence and efforts will not be easily forgotten.

The energy sector, government, and ECG staff alike now turn their attention to the next phase for the company, with expectations that a new leader will soon be appointed to continue the work Mahama has begun. For now, though, Samuel Dubik Mahama’s resignation marks the end of a notable chapter in the story of ECG and the broader energy sector in Ghana.
