Electoral Commission Requests New Candidate for Ghana Freedom Party Following Akua Donkor’s Passing

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has formally requested that the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) nominate a new presidential candidate within 10 days, following the unexpected passing of its flagbearer, Madam Akua Donkor. This development has also led the EC to temporarily suspend the printing of presidential ballot papers, which were near completion, as they await the party’s decision on a replacement.

In an official statement on October 29, the EC shared, “The Commission has since informed the GFP to make arrangements to nominate a new Candidate and inform the Commission accordingly. In the meantime, the Commission has suspended the printing of Presidential Ballot Papers which was near completion.” This suspension is expected to allow GFP sufficient time to choose a successor without disrupting the timeline for the upcoming general elections, scheduled for December 7, 2024.

Madam Akua Donkor, who passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra, was a well-known figure in Ghanaian politics, recognized as the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party. Her political journey was marked by a commitment to advocating for farmers’ and women’s rights, which earned her a respected place in the country’s political landscape. The details surrounding her death remain undisclosed, but her loss has left a significant void for the GFP and her many supporters across the nation.

The Electoral Commission extended its heartfelt condolences to Madam Akua Donkor’s family, acknowledging the impact of her loss as the GFP navigates this challenging period. Her passing comes at a crucial time, as the party had already been gearing up for the December elections. The GFP now faces the task of nominating a candidate capable of carrying forward Akua Donkor’s vision and representing the party on the national stage.

As Ghana approaches its general elections, the nation’s attention turns to the GFP, with anticipation for their next steps and the introduction of a new candidate. The Electoral Commission’s decision to halt the ballot paper printing underscores the gravity of this situation, emphasizing the need for the GFP to act swiftly to secure its position in the upcoming election.
