Ghana Secures Visa-Free Travel Agreements With Four Global South Nations Amid US Travel Restrictions

Ghanaian passport holders can now travel visa-free to four new countries, following a series of diplomatic agreements announced by Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The move is being hailed as a strategic response to the tightening of U.S. travel policies that have recently impacted Ghana and several other African nations.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that Ghana has signed reciprocal visa waiver agreements with Colombia, Mozambique, Dominica, and São Tomé and Príncipe. These new arrangements will allow Ghanaian citizens to travel freely to these countries without the need for a visa, further expanding Ghana’s diplomatic influence and global mobility.

“In addition to the visa waiver agreement we signed with Morocco in June, these new arrangements represent our commitment to expanding Ghana’s global presence and strengthening our bilateral ties across the Global South,” the Foreign Minister posted.

According to Ablakwa, these agreements are part of a broader plan by the current administration under President John Dramani Mahama to enhance the international standing of the Ghanaian passport.

“The Mahama administration is determined to make the Ghanaian passport one of the most valuable and respected travel documents in the world,” he affirmed.

A Strategic Diplomatic Response

This announcement follows the controversial decision by the United States to revise its visa reciprocity policy with Ghana. In July, the U.S. government introduced new restrictions limiting Ghanaian tourist, business, and academic travelers to single-entry visas valid for just three months—a significant reduction from previous multi-entry and longer-duration visas.

The U.S. policy change is part of a broader shift under former President Donald Trump, whose administration resumed influence in Washington after the 2024 elections. On June 5, the U.S. announced sweeping new travel bans targeting 12 countries, including Chad, the Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Libya, Somalia, and Sudan. While Ghana was not on the initial list, an internal cable from the U.S. State Department, leaked days later, revealed that up to 36 other countries—Ghana among them—were being considered for similar restrictions.

The memo cited concerns over alleged terrorism links, anti-Semitic rhetoric, and anti-American activities. While no official ban on Ghana has yet materialized, the threat has sparked widespread concern within the Ghanaian diaspora and diplomatic circles.

Impact of U.S. Restrictions

The implications of such restrictions are potentially far-reaching. Ghana received approximately $4.6 billion in remittances from the United States in 2023, according to the World Bank—making it the second-highest recipient of U.S. remittances in Africa after Nigeria. Any policy that limits the ability of Ghanaians to travel or work in the U.S. could have significant economic repercussions.

Moreover, the new single-entry visa policy undermines academic and professional exchange programs between the two nations. Ghanaian students, lecturers, and professionals who frequently travel to the U.S. for short-term engagements now face increased bureaucratic and financial burdens.

Turning to the Global South

As Western countries impose stricter immigration and travel controls, African countries like Ghana are looking inward and laterally—toward fellow developing nations—to boost mobility and strengthen regional cooperation.

In July, Kenya announced it would abolish visa requirements for nearly all African countries, echoing previous moves by Ghana, Benin, and Rwanda. These initiatives are part of the African Union’s push for continental free movement, aimed at fostering intra-African trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.

Ghana’s latest visa deals with Dominica, Colombia, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe reflect a broader strategy to build new alliances within the Global South. By signing these reciprocal agreements, Ghana not only enhances opportunities for its citizens but also encourages tourism, investment, and educational exchange.

“These partnerships represent more than just travel convenience—they are a step towards rebalancing global diplomacy,” said international affairs analyst Dr. Evelyn Baah. “In the face of Western restrictions, countries like Ghana are asserting their agency and choosing cooperation over confrontation.”

Public Reaction and Next Steps

Public reaction to the new visa waivers has been largely positive, with many Ghanaians praising the Foreign Ministry for taking proactive steps in uncertain geopolitical times.

On social media, users expressed enthusiasm about exploring new destinations without the burden of visa applications. Others highlighted the importance of deepening relationships with countries that show mutual respect and openness.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to provide detailed timelines for when the new visa-free travel arrangements will take effect. However, officials indicate that implementation frameworks are already in motion and that further announcements will be made in the coming weeks.

Minister Ablakwa also hinted at additional agreements currently under negotiation, though he stopped short of naming specific countries. If successful, these future deals could further bolster Ghana’s passport strength and align the country more closely with other non-Western partners.

Conclusion

As Ghana navigates a shifting global landscape, its diplomatic strategy appears focused on resilience and diversification. While longstanding ties with the United States remain important, the government’s pivot toward visa-free mobility with Global South allies demonstrates a bold commitment to sovereignty and global integration.

In a world where travel is increasingly politicized, Ghana’s efforts to expand freedom of movement for its citizens offer a hopeful vision of borderless cooperation—one built not on exclusion, but on trust, mutual benefit, and shared aspirations.
