Today, November 1, 2024, the government launched Ghana’s first high-speed 5G internet service in Accra, marking a significant step forward in the country’s digital transformation. This service, launched in partnership with NextGen Infraco, is expected to unlock new opportunities across various sectors and increase digital inclusivity for all Ghanaians.
NextGen Infraco, the company leading this 5G initiative, is a consortium that includes the Ghanaian government alongside seven other key partners: Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, and telecommunications operators AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana. Together, these stakeholders aim to build a robust 5G network that will empower individuals and businesses alike while enhancing the country’s position in the global digital landscape.
At the official launch event, Tenu Awoonor, the Managing Director of NextGen Infraco, emphasized the company’s commitment to making 5G technology a valuable asset to Ghana’s economy. In his opening remarks, he pledged that NextGen Infraco would work to maximize the financial and economic returns on the country’s investment in this advanced infrastructure. According to Awoonor, the introduction of 5G will not only foster innovation but also serve as a catalyst for economic growth and national development.
“With 5G, we can create a more inclusive society where no one in Ghana is left behind,” he said. “Whether a farmer in Tamale, a small business owner in Kumasi, or a student in Cape Coast, 5G will connect you to the world and open doors to new opportunities.” Awoonor expressed pride in NextGen Infraco’s role in this transformative journey, stressing that the company is fully invested in shaping the future of Ghana’s digital economy. He described 5G as a tool that goes beyond technological advancement, promising social and economic empowerment for every Ghanaian.
As he addressed the attendees, Awoonor reiterated that the launch of 5G represents the beginning of a new era for the nation’s digital landscape. “As we stand here today on the brink of this new digital frontier, I want to remind us all that this is just the beginning. Together, we will harness the power of 5G to build a stronger and more prosperous Ghana,” he declared, affirming his commitment to support the government’s vision for a digitally inclusive future.
