Johannesburg’s Iconic Planetarium Set to Re-Open with Advanced Digital Dome

In an exciting development for science enthusiasts and star-gazers, the largest planetarium in sub-Saharan Africa is set to reopen in Johannesburg early next year, featuring a completely modernized digital dome. The newly revamped Wits Anglo American Digital Dome at Wits University will provide audiences with an extraordinary experience of the solar system and beyond, showcasing visuals through its cutting-edge digital setup.

The highlight of the new planetarium is its immersive digital projection, powered by ten state-of-the-art projectors paired with surround sound. This impressive technology brings the celestial experience to life on a massive scale, creating an engaging space for both education and entertainment.

Star-gazers and technology fans had a preview of the dome’s capabilities on Wednesday, giving them a glimpse of what this pioneering facility will offer.

Moumita Aich, head of the dome, emphasized the impact that the updated technology will have on visitors, especially young children who are accustomed to spending time on smaller screens. According to Aich, this new setup provides “screen time” that is not only engaging but educational, allowing visitors to gain valuable knowledge of astronomy within a 20- or 30-minute session.

“You will actually learn a lot from that,” Aich adds, underscoring how the dome’s high-tech environment will transform the educational experience.

Originally opened in 1960, the Wits planetarium has welcomed tens of thousands of school children, aspiring astronomers, and curious visitors over the decades.

Its renovation signals a new era for the facility, expanding its role as an educational and research space. Scientists now have a venue to display their findings and experience their research on a stunning 360-degree screen, giving them a unique perspective on the cosmos that traditional labs or offices cannot match.

The planetarium’s upgrade is set to encourage more people to explore the wonders of space while also offering a valuable educational tool to schools and other institutions.

By merging entertainment with education, the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome is poised to inspire a new generation of astronomy enthusiasts and create lasting interest in the science of the universe.
