The Senior Project Officer of Green Transition Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Gloria Kusi, has questioned why the Group’s extensive contributions to sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) continue to receive limited public attention despite their scale and impact.
Speaking at the Jospong Leadership Conference held at Gomoa, Dr. Kusi noted that Jospong’s sustainability work goes far beyond policy declarations. According to her, the Group’s interventions are practical, capital-intensive, and already transforming lives across Ghana and parts of Africa, yet they rarely dominate sustainability conversations locally or internationally.
“To be honest, that gap between effort and recognition seemed to bother me,” she said.
Dr. Kusi explained that the Jospong Group is actively advancing multiple SDGs through sustainable job creation, environmentally responsible operations, and significant investment in circular economy infrastructure. She cited the establishment of more than 18 raw material recovery outlets and 36 integrated recycling and compost plants operating across Ghana, with similar facilities now expanding into other African countries.
In her view, these interventions go beyond corporate responsibility. They represent tangible contributions to global green governance and climate responsibility and therefore deserve stronger visibility on both national and international platforms.
Dr. Kusi was co-presenting with her General Manager, Dr. Glenn Gyimah, during a session themed “The Frontier: Sustainability and Purpose-Driven Leadership.” The session examined how leadership decisions made today will determine organisational relevance in an increasingly green global economy.
Dr. Gyimah used the platform to challenge leaders within the Jospong Group to rethink leadership in the waste management and environmental services sector. He argued that strategy alone is no longer sufficient, stressing the need for a paradigm shift that places sustainability, innovation, and long-term environmental thinking at the core of leadership decision-making.
He cautioned that the future of the conglomerate lies firmly in the hands of its current leaders, noting that their ability to anticipate change, align with global green transitions, and make bold sustainability choices will define Jospong’s place in the future.
As part of the conference, Green Transition Limited assured the Group of a comprehensive 2025 Sustainability Report, which, according to Dr. Gyimah, will document Jospong’s expanding footprint in environmental protection, climate action, and inclusive development.
Beyond waste management, Jospong’s contribution to the SDGs spans several sectors. Through its sanitation and waste value chain, the Group directly supports SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Its job creation initiatives, particularly for youth and marginalised groups, advance SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), while its recycling and composting plants significantly contribute to SDG 13 (Climate Action) by reducing landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
There are also less visible but equally impactful contributions, including skills transfer, technology localisation, and partnerships with local authorities and communities. Dr. Kusi highlighted initiatives such as the conversion of over 1,000 waste-powered systems from fuel to electric energy as examples of sustainability efforts that often go untold, despite their development significance.
The Jospong Leadership Conference brought together executives, managers, and partners to reflect on leadership in a rapidly changing world. From the sustainability session, one message was clear: the future belongs to organisations that successfully combine purpose with profit, and leadership with responsibility.
Whether the world is paying enough attention remains open to debate. However, as the presenters made clear, the work is already happening—and it continues to deliver real benefits for Mother Ghana.
