Mahama Embarks on Five-Day Working Visit to South Korea to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to undertake a five-day working visit to South Korea from March 10 to March 14 as part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic, economic and strategic cooperation between Ghana and the Asian nation.

The visit is expected to deepen bilateral engagement between the two countries while creating new opportunities for investment, technology transfer and trade partnerships.

According to a statement issued by the Government Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President will depart Accra on Sunday to begin the official visit.

The trip forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to expand international partnerships and strengthen economic diplomacy by engaging with key global partners that have demonstrated strong industrial growth and technological advancement.

During the visit, President Mahama is expected to hold bilateral discussions with the President of South Korea, Lee Jae Myung. The meeting will focus on strengthening diplomatic ties while exploring areas of cooperation in trade, infrastructure, technology, education and industrial development.

Ghana and South Korea have maintained cordial relations for decades, with cooperation spanning sectors such as infrastructure development, energy, manufacturing and education.

Both countries continue to seek ways of expanding these partnerships to support economic growth and sustainable development.

The bilateral meeting between the two leaders is expected to review existing agreements while identifying new opportunities that could enhance collaboration between Ghanaian and Korean institutions.

Government officials believe the discussions will further reinforce Ghana’s commitment to strengthening its economic partnerships across Asia while attracting investment to key sectors of the Ghanaian economy.

In addition to his meeting with the South Korean President, Mahama is also scheduled to engage with the Speaker of the Korean National Assembly, Woo Won-shik.

The meeting with the parliamentary leadership will focus on strengthening legislative cooperation between the two countries while promoting parliamentary diplomacy as a tool for advancing international relations.

Officials say parliamentary collaboration plays an important role in strengthening bilateral ties, as it creates opportunities for lawmakers to share experiences, develop policy cooperation and build stronger institutional partnerships.

Another key highlight of the President’s visit will be his participation in a ship-naming ceremony at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan.

Hyundai Heavy Industries is one of the largest shipbuilding companies in the world and is widely recognised for its advanced industrial capabilities and technological innovation.

The ceremony is expected to symbolise growing economic cooperation between Ghana and South Korea, particularly in areas related to maritime development and industrial infrastructure.

Ghana has been pursuing policies aimed at strengthening its maritime sector, including expanding port infrastructure and improving shipping and logistics systems.

Participation in the ceremony at the Hyundai shipyard is therefore seen as an opportunity to reinforce partnerships that could support Ghana’s long-term maritime ambitions.

President Mahama is also expected to deliver a speech during a conferment ceremony at Yonsei University, one of South Korea’s most prestigious academic institutions.

Yonsei University is internationally respected for its academic excellence and research contributions, particularly in fields such as technology, engineering, economics and global studies.

The President’s address is expected to focus on Ghana’s development agenda, international cooperation and the role of education in shaping the future of emerging economies.

Education remains a key area of collaboration between Ghana and South Korea, with many Ghanaian students pursuing academic opportunities in Korean universities.

Government officials say the engagement with Yonsei University will further strengthen academic cooperation and encourage greater exchange programmes between Ghanaian and Korean institutions.

As part of the visit, President Mahama will also meet with members of the Ghanaian community living, studying and working in South Korea.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for the President to interact directly with Ghanaian nationals abroad while discussing issues affecting their welfare and contributions to national development.

Ghana’s diaspora communities play an important role in the country’s development through remittances, knowledge transfer and international networking.

Engaging with the Ghanaian community abroad remains an important component of the government’s efforts to strengthen ties with citizens living outside the country.

The President’s itinerary will also include a dinner meeting with chief executives and business leaders in South Korea.

The business engagement is expected to focus on exploring investment opportunities and strengthening trade relations between Ghanaian and Korean companies.

South Korea is widely recognised as one of Asia’s most technologically advanced economies, with global influence in sectors such as electronics, automobile manufacturing, shipbuilding and digital technology.

Officials believe stronger economic engagement between Ghana and South Korea could support Ghana’s industrialisation agenda while promoting technology transfer and skills development.

The meeting with business leaders is therefore expected to highlight Ghana’s investment potential while encouraging Korean companies to explore opportunities in sectors such as manufacturing, energy, agriculture, infrastructure and digital innovation.

Ghana has increasingly positioned itself as a strategic destination for investment in West Africa due to its political stability, growing economy and expanding infrastructure.

Government officials say the visit will help showcase these advantages to potential investors while reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to strengthening international trade partnerships.

Beyond economic diplomacy, the trip also reflects Ghana’s broader foreign policy objective of strengthening relations with key global partners.

South Korea has emerged as one of the most influential economies in Asia, making it an important partner for countries seeking technological cooperation and industrial partnerships.

By engaging with South Korean leadership, business executives and academic institutions, Ghana aims to expand collaboration in areas that can contribute to national development.

Analysts believe the visit could open new opportunities for cooperation in sectors such as renewable energy, digital transformation, smart infrastructure and industrial manufacturing.

Such partnerships are considered essential as Ghana continues its efforts to diversify the economy and accelerate development.

The five-day working visit is therefore expected to play a strategic role in strengthening Ghana’s diplomatic and economic engagement with South Korea.

At the conclusion of the visit on March 14, President Mahama is expected to return to Ghana after completing a series of high-level engagements aimed at reinforcing cooperation between the two nations.
