Masahudu Alhassan Appointed Head Coach of Italian Club Anzio Calcio

Former Ghana international Masahudu Alhassan has taken a major step in his post-playing career after being appointed head coach of Italian Serie D side Anzio Calcio 1924.

The 33-year-old former Black Stars defender will combine his new responsibilities with active football duties, assuming a player-coach role following his move from Atletico Pontinia.

Anzio Calcio officially confirmed the appointment in a club statement, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding the team’s technical leadership ahead of the decisive phase of the season.

Club Confirms Appointment

In an announcement released on its official platforms, Anzio Calcio expressed confidence in the Ghanaian’s leadership and technical ability.

“Alhassan Masahudu is the new head coach of Anzio. The uncertainty surrounding the team’s technical leadership has now been resolved, with Masahudu set to guide the squad through to the end of the season,” the statement read.

The club explained that the decision was part of a strategy focused on stability and continuity, opting to promote from within rather than seeking an external replacement.

Trust in Experience and Continuity

According to Anzio, Alhassan’s familiarity with the club, his professional background and his coaching credentials made him the ideal candidate for the role.

“The club has opted for an internal solution, placing its trust in the former Udinese player of Ghanaian nationality,” the statement continued.

“Already part of the Anzio squad as a quality addition, Masahudu also holds a UEFA coaching licence and will now put his experience at the service of the club in this new role.”

The appointment signals strong belief in Alhassan’s ability to lead both on and off the pitch, particularly as the club navigates the latter stages of the campaign.

Current League Situation

Anzio Calcio currently compete in Serie D Group G, Italy’s fourth tier, and are battling to improve their league position.

After 23 matches, the club sits 14th on the table with 23 points, making the remainder of the season crucial in their bid to secure safety and stability.

Alhassan has already featured six times this season for the club as a player, gaining first-hand knowledge of the squad’s strengths and areas needing improvement — an advantage expected to ease his transition into management.

A Career Shaped in Italy

Masahudu Alhassan’s appointment is a natural progression for a footballer who has spent the majority of his professional life in Italy.

After arriving in Europe as a teenager, he built an extensive career across the Italian football pyramid, gaining experience in both top-flight and lower-division football.

His clubs have included:

  • Udinese (Serie A)
  • Genoa
  • Perugia
  • Latina
  • Novara

His most prominent spell came at Udinese, where he made his Serie A debut and earned recognition for his pace, defensive discipline and versatility as a left-back and wing-back.

Years of competing in Italy’s highly tactical environment have given Alhassan a deep understanding of the league’s football culture — a quality Anzio believes will be invaluable in his new role.

Transition From Player to Coach

The move into coaching marks a defining moment in Alhassan’s career, as he joins a growing number of former African internationals making the transition from the pitch to the technical area.

Holding a UEFA coaching licence, he has spent recent seasons preparing for life after active football, working closely with coaches and studying modern tactical systems.

As player-coach, Alhassan is expected to maintain leadership within the dressing room while also overseeing training, match preparation and tactical planning.

Club officials believe his dual role will help bridge communication between players and management, particularly during high-pressure fixtures.

International Career With Ghana

On the international stage, Alhassan represented Ghana’s senior national team between 2011 and 2012, earning eight caps for the Black Stars.

Before his senior debut, he was a key member of the Black Satellites, featuring at the 2011 Africa Youth Championship, where Ghana showcased one of its strongest youth sides of the era.

His performances earned him a call-up to the senior national team, and he was later selected as part of Ghana’s squad for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Although he did not enjoy a lengthy international career, his inclusion in major tournaments reflected his standing as one of Ghana’s promising defenders at the time.

A New Chapter Begins

Alhassan’s appointment has been welcomed by fans of both Anzio Calcio and Ghanaian football, with many viewing the move as a positive step toward nurturing African coaching talent in Europe.

His challenge will be immediate — to stabilise the club’s league position, instil tactical discipline and guide Anzio safely through the remainder of the season.

Success in the role could open doors to higher-level coaching opportunities within Italy’s professional leagues.

Pride for Ghana Football

The former Black Stars defender’s rise into European coaching continues a growing trend of Ghanaian footballers transitioning into management roles abroad.

His journey underscores the increasing influence of African professionals not only as players, but also as tacticians and leaders within the global game.

For young Ghanaian footballers, Alhassan’s story stands as a reminder that football careers can extend beyond playing — into mentorship, leadership and long-term contribution to the sport.

Looking Ahead

With weeks remaining in the Serie D season, attention now turns to how Alhassan will shape Anzio’s performances on the pitch.

Balancing leadership, tactics and active playing duties will present challenges, but his experience, discipline and understanding of Italian football place him in strong position to succeed.

As Anzio Calcio begin this new chapter, all eyes will be on the Ghanaian coach to see whether he can translate years of professional experience into results from the technical area.
