Morocco awarded AFCON title after CAF overturns Senegal’s victory

Morocco has been officially declared the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations following a dramatic decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeals Board, which overturned Senegal’s extra-time victory in a controversial final played earlier this year.

The ruling, announced on Tuesday, brings an unexpected conclusion to one of the most chaotic finals in recent AFCON history. CAF confirmed that Senegal had forfeited the match, resulting in their 1-0 extra-time win being converted into a 3-0 default victory in favour of host nation Morocco.

The final, played on January 18 in Rabat, was marred by controversy, tension, and disruptions that ultimately influenced the outcome of the appeal. Senegal, led by head coach Pape Thiaw, staged a protest during stoppage time after Morocco was awarded a decisive penalty. The players walked off the pitch for approximately 15 minutes in protest of the referee’s decision, creating confusion and escalating tensions inside the stadium.

The situation worsened as some fans attempted to invade the pitch, further disrupting proceedings. Although order was eventually restored and the match resumed, the atmosphere remained charged and contentious.

Morocco’s forward Brahim Díaz stepped up to take the crucial penalty, attempting a delicate chipped effort commonly referred to as a “Panenka.” However, Senegal’s goalkeeper Édouard Mendy anticipated the move and made a crucial save, denying Morocco what could have been a decisive goal in regulation time.

With momentum swinging in their favour, Senegal went on to score the only goal of the match in extra time, seemingly securing the title. However, the events leading up to that moment, particularly the temporary walk-off by Senegal’s players, became the focal point of CAF’s disciplinary and appeals process.

The tension in the stadium had already been heightened moments before the penalty incident. Senegal had what appeared to be a legitimate goal ruled out in the second minute of stoppage time. The goal was disallowed due to a foul attributed to Abdoulaye Seck, though television replays suggested minimal contact with Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi. The decision sparked immediate outrage from the Senegalese camp and contributed to their decision to protest shortly after.

Following the match, CAF’s disciplinary committee initially imposed heavy sanctions on both teams, including fines exceeding $1 million and suspensions for several players and officials. Despite acknowledging the disorder and breaches of conduct, the committee at the time upheld the match result.

However, upon review, CAF’s Appeals Board took a different stance, focusing on Senegal’s decision to leave the pitch without the referee’s authorization. In its ruling, the board cited Article 82 of the AFCON tournament regulations, which clearly states that any team that refuses to continue play or leaves the field before the official end of a match without permission shall be considered to have lost the match and be eliminated from the competition.

Based on this provision, the Appeals Board determined that Senegal’s actions constituted a breach significant enough to warrant forfeiture of the final. As a result, Morocco was awarded a 3-0 victory by default, officially handing them the continental title.

The decision is expected to generate significant debate across the football world, particularly among fans and stakeholders in Senegal, who may view the ruling as harsh given that the match was eventually completed. Nonetheless, CAF maintains that adherence to tournament regulations is essential to preserving the integrity and discipline of the competition.

There remains a possibility that the matter could be escalated further. Senegal is expected to consider taking the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which serves as the highest authority in global sports dispute resolution. Should that happen, the final outcome of the AFCON tournament could still be subject to further legal scrutiny.

For Morocco, however, the decision marks a historic and dramatic triumph on home soil. While the circumstances surrounding the victory may remain controversial, the official records will reflect Morocco as the champions of Africa following CAF’s ruling.

The incident also raises broader questions about officiating standards, disciplinary consistency, and the handling of high-pressure situations in major tournaments. As African football continues to grow in global prominence, such controversies highlight the importance of clear regulations and firm enforcement to maintain credibility.

CAF is yet to provide further details on whether additional sanctions will follow or how future matches will be safeguarded against similar disruptions. For now, the focus remains on the unprecedented nature of the decision and its implications for both teams and the wider football community.
