Motsepe Pledges Unity, Announces Visits to Senegal and Morocco Amid AFCON Tensions

The President of the Confederation of African Football, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has called for unity across the continent following recent tensions surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations, announcing plans to visit both Senegal and Morocco in the coming days.

Speaking at a press conference held on Sunday, March 29, in Cairo, Egypt, Motsepe addressed growing concerns within African football after CAF’s disciplinary committee decision to award the 2025 AFCON title to Morocco, overturning the original outcome involving Senegal. The decision has sparked widespread debate and placed relations between key football nations under increased scrutiny.

Motsepe described his upcoming visits as part of efforts to engage directly with stakeholders and reinforce the importance of solidarity within African football. He indicated that his trip to Senegal would include meetings with government officials and leaders within the country’s football administration.

According to him, the mission is intended to strengthen dialogue and ensure that recent developments do not damage the long-standing relationship between football communities across the continent.

He also confirmed plans to travel to Morocco, highlighting CAF’s commitment to maintaining open communication with all parties involved. The visits are expected to play a crucial role in easing tensions and reaffirming shared values within African football.

Motsepe stressed that football must remain a unifying force rather than a source of division. He warned against allowing disagreements over competition outcomes to create lasting rifts between nations.

“We will not allow football to divide our people by bringing stress and tension. On the contrary, football must unite our people,” he said.

He further emphasised the historical and cultural ties between Senegal and Morocco, noting that these relationships go beyond sport and should be preserved regardless of competitive disputes.

“CAF and I are determined to ensure that these excellent relations, these historic relations between the people of Senegal and the people of Morocco, continue to develop and strengthen,” he added.

Addressing the Senegalese public directly, Motsepe expressed solidarity and reassurance, emphasising that CAF stands with all its member nations.

“My message is we are with you, we support you. We are all Africans,” he said.

He noted that a similar message had been conveyed to Morocco, underscoring his intention to maintain balance and fairness in engaging both sides. His remarks reflect an effort to prevent the situation from escalating into broader political or social tensions.

Motsepe also highlighted the deep connections between the two countries, pointing out that many Senegalese citizens live and work in Morocco. He stressed that football should not be used as a tool to create division among people who share strong historical and social ties.

“We are not going to use football to divide people; it should unite us,” he reiterated.

The CAF president also acknowledged the strong presence of Senegalese supporters during AFCON matches held in Morocco, describing it as a demonstration of unity and mutual respect between the nations. He said he was impressed by the number of Senegalese fans who attended matches in Moroccan stadiums to support the national team.

The ongoing situation has placed CAF under significant pressure, with calls for transparency and clarity in decision-making processes. Motsepe’s public engagement and planned visits appear aimed at addressing these concerns while reinforcing confidence in the organisation’s leadership.

Observers note that the controversy surrounding the AFCON decision has broader implications for governance within African football. Ensuring fairness, consistency and accountability in disciplinary matters remains a key challenge for CAF as it seeks to maintain credibility.

Motsepe’s approach reflects a diplomatic effort to manage the situation while preserving unity among member associations. By engaging directly with both Senegal and Morocco, he is positioning CAF as an organisation committed to dialogue and conflict resolution.

The press conference in Cairo marked his first public address since the decision was announced, making it a significant moment in shaping the narrative around the issue. His emphasis on unity and shared identity suggests a strategic effort to shift focus away from division and toward collective progress.

As African football continues to grow in global influence, maintaining strong relationships between nations will be essential. The ability of CAF to navigate challenges such as this will play a key role in determining the organisation’s effectiveness and reputation.

Motsepe’s message highlights the broader role of football as a platform for connection and cultural exchange across the continent. While competition remains central to the sport, he stressed that it should not come at the expense of unity.

The coming days are expected to be critical as the CAF president undertakes his visits and engages with key stakeholders. These interactions may help shape the next phase of discussions and contribute to easing tensions surrounding the AFCON decision.

For now, the focus remains on dialogue, reassurance and the reaffirmation of shared values within African football. Motsepe’s remarks signal an intention to move forward constructively while addressing the concerns raised by recent developments.
