National Small Scale Miners Task Force Raids River Mankraso to Combat Illegal Mining

In a determined effort to clamp down on illegal mining activities, the National Association of Small Scale Miners task force launched a significant operation on the River Mankraso in the Ahafo Ano South West District on Wednesday, September 11. The operation targeted illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which has been wreaking havoc on the environment, particularly river bodies.

During the raid, the task force seized a range of equipment used by the illegal miners. Upon spotting the task force, the miners quickly fled the scene, leaving behind their machinery and tools scattered along the riverbank. With no miners to apprehend, the task force made the decisive move to destroy the abandoned mining machines to prevent further illegal activities.

Among the equipment found were dredging machines, which were immediately set ablaze by the task force. Additionally, other items such as water pumps, motors, and tanks were confiscated and kept as evidence to support future investigations and legal actions against the perpetrators.

A spokesperson for the Small Scale Miners Association stated that the task force is resolute in its mission to intensify efforts against galamsey, particularly those operations that cause extensive damage to river bodies. They emphasized that the association will not tolerate any illegal mining activities that continue to devastate the environment and endanger Ghana’s natural resources.

The spokesperson reiterated the association’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s environment for future generations. They reaffirmed their dedication to safeguarding the country’s natural resources by eradicating illegal mining activities. The spokesperson highlighted that the recent operation on the River Mankraso was just one of many planned raids aimed at eliminating galamsey from Ghana’s rivers and forests.

The task force’s action comes amid growing concerns about the negative impacts of illegal mining on Ghana’s ecosystems. Galamsey operations, which often involve the use of toxic chemicals and unregulated methods, have resulted in the contamination of rivers and water bodies, destruction of farmlands, and widespread deforestation. The government, environmental groups, and local communities have been calling for more stringent measures to combat this illegal practice and protect the country’s natural heritage.

The Small Scale Miners Association, in collaboration with other stakeholders, has stepped up its efforts to confront this issue head-on. The association’s task force has been actively patrolling various mining areas across the country, especially those with reports of rampant illegal activities. This latest operation on the River Mankraso reflects their ongoing commitment to preventing further environmental degradation and ensuring compliance with mining regulations.

The spokesperson urged all small-scale miners to adhere to the regulations governing their activities and warned that those caught engaging in illegal mining would face severe consequences. He appealed to local communities to cooperate with the authorities by reporting any suspicious activities and supporting efforts to eliminate galamsey from their areas.

Furthermore, the association is working closely with the government and law enforcement agencies to strengthen the legal framework governing small-scale mining. They are advocating for stricter penalties for offenders and more resources to be allocated to combat illegal mining activities.

The spokesperson also expressed gratitude to the government and other partners for their support in the fight against galamsey. He called for continued collaboration to ensure the successful eradication of illegal mining and the preservation of Ghana’s environment.

Looking forward, the Small Scale Miners Association remains determined to continue its operations against illegal mining, focusing on areas where galamsey activities are most prevalent. They plan to conduct more raids, increase surveillance, and work with local communities to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal mining.

The association’s task force will also focus on restoring damaged river bodies and ecosystems, seeking to rehabilitate areas affected by illegal mining. These efforts aim to protect water resources, farmland, and forests, which are crucial for the country’s sustainable development.

The operation on River Mankraso is part of a broader strategy to combat galamsey across the country. It is a clear message from the Small Scale Miners Association that illegal mining will not be tolerated. The association’s efforts, backed by public support and government cooperation, will continue to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources for current and future generations.

With the determination of the task force and the support of all stakeholders, the battle against illegal mining remains a priority in protecting the nation’s environment and securing a sustainable future for all Ghanaians.
