NPP Promises Duty-Free Vehicle Imports for Nurses if Elected in 2025

The New Patriotic Party’s Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, announced a significant commitment for nurses in Ghana, stating that they would be able to import vehicles with engine capacities under 1.8 litres duty-free if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia becomes president in 2025. Dr. Prempeh, widely known as Napo, shared this pledge during an address at the Korle Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training Institute in Accra on Wednesday, October 23.

This announcement generated considerable enthusiasm among nursing trainees attending the event.

“Dr. Bawumia, the incoming president of Ghana, will provide free duty on vehicles with engine capacities less than 1.8 for nurses,” Napo declared, emphasizing the NPP’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of healthcare workers. He underscored the party’s recognition of the crucial role nurses play in healthcare, stating that a government led by Dr. Bawumia would introduce further policies aimed at enhancing the lives of nurses across the country.

Napo elaborated on the proposed initiative, explaining that the duty-free policy would be among several interventions designed to make life better and more comfortable for nurses. “The NPP recognizes and appreciates the key roles that our nurses play in providing healthcare, so we shall also make sure that your lives will be better,” he said. Napo further reiterated that the Bawumia-led NPP government would continue the nursing trainee allowance policy, a program the party previously introduced to support nursing students.

He cautioned, however, that this allowance would be discontinued if the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President John Mahama returned to power. “Former President John Mahama and the NDC do not believe in the nursing trainee allowance,” Napo warned, urging students to consider the potential impact on their future. “If they win, they will cancel it, making life harder for you. So reject the NDC,” he advised.

Additionally, Dr. Prempeh outlined the NPP’s ongoing initiatives to bolster healthcare infrastructure through the Agenda 111 hospital project. This major initiative, he noted, aims to enhance healthcare access while creating job opportunities for nurses and other healthcare professionals. With new hospitals under construction across various regions, he emphasized the potential benefits for employment and healthcare improvement.

In closing, Napo appealed directly to nursing students and professionals, urging them to rally behind Dr. Bawumia in the 2025 elections and to support all 275 NPP parliamentary candidates. “The NPP cares for our nurses,” he said, encouraging the crowd to place their trust in the party’s vision for the healthcare sector and the nation.
