Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has stated that his rise to success would have been inevitable even if he had not pursued a career in football, citing his strong work ethic, determination, and resilience during his early years.
The Nigerian international made the remarks during a livestream conversation with content creator Cater Efe on Friday night, where he reflected on his journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of Africa’s most prominent footballers.
Osimhen, who currently plays for Turkish club Galatasaray, explained that his mindset and willingness to work hard set him apart long before his football breakthrough. According to him, his early experiences shaped his character and instilled in him a relentless drive to succeed, regardless of the path he chose.
“The way I hustled hard back in the trenches, even if I didn’t make it in football, I would still have made money like crazy,” he said. “I was very determined, hardworking and passionate. I did a lot of menial jobs and never turned down any legitimate opportunity of making money.”
His comments offer insight into the mindset that has propelled him to the top of European football. Growing up in challenging conditions, Osimhen developed a strong sense of discipline and a willingness to seize opportunities, traits that he believes would have guaranteed his success in any field.
The striker also recounted the difficult early stages of his professional career, particularly his experience in Belgium, where he faced rejection before eventually finding his breakthrough. He revealed that he was turned down by two clubs before finally securing a move that would change the course of his career.
“I was rejected twice in Belgium by two clubs. With just three days left in the transfer window, another club, Charleroi, made everything happen. That was the turning point,” he explained.
Osimhen joined Belgian side Charleroi on loan from German club VfL Wolfsburg in 2018, a move that proved to be pivotal. His performances at Charleroi reignited his career and opened the door to further opportunities in European football, eventually leading to his rise as one of the continent’s most sought-after strikers.
His journey underscores the importance of perseverance in professional sports, where setbacks are often part of the process. Football analysts have frequently pointed to Osimhen’s resilience as one of the defining qualities behind his success.
Beyond football, Osimhen also spoke about Nigeria’s global cultural influence, particularly through music. When asked to compare his wealth with that of leading Afrobeats artistes Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido, he declined to engage in such comparisons, choosing instead to commend their contributions to the country’s image.
“I have met Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido on several occasions. They are giving our country a positive image around the globe. It is a thing of pride to hear Nigerian songs in foreign clubs,” he said.
He emphasised that Nigerian artistes play a significant role in promoting the country internationally, noting that their impact is sometimes underappreciated by those who have not experienced it firsthand.
“Nigeria is so blessed with a lot of talented artists. A lot of Nigerians don’t know how valuable our artists are because they haven’t travelled overseas, but those of us who are there know that they are doing a good job for the country,” he added.
Osimhen’s remarks highlight the growing intersection between sports and entertainment in shaping Africa’s global identity. Both industries have become powerful tools for cultural diplomacy, projecting positive narratives about the continent on the international stage.
In recent years, Nigerian footballers and musicians alike have gained widespread recognition, contributing to a broader perception of Africa as a hub of talent and creativity. Osimhen’s acknowledgment of this synergy reflects a broader awareness among athletes of their role in representing their countries beyond the pitch.
His personal story continues to inspire many young Africans who aspire to succeed despite difficult circumstances. From performing menial jobs in his early years to becoming a top-level striker in Europe, Osimhen’s journey is often cited as a testament to the power of determination and hard work.
Sports development experts have also pointed out that stories like his can serve as motivation for youth across the continent, encouraging them to remain focused and resilient in the pursuit of their goals.
As one of Nigeria’s leading football figures, Osimhen carries significant expectations both on and off the field. His performances for club and country have consistently drawn attention, while his personal story adds depth to his public image.
While his achievements in football are widely celebrated, his recent comments suggest that he views success as something that transcends a single career path. For Osimhen, the principles of hard work, persistence, and self-belief are universal, capable of driving success in any endeavour.
His reflections also offer a broader lesson about the importance of mindset in achieving success. By emphasising his willingness to take on any legitimate work and his refusal to give up in the face of rejection, he presents a model of resilience that resonates beyond sports.
As African football continues to produce world-class talent, figures like Osimhen remain central to the narrative of growth and excellence on the continent. His journey, combined with his outlook on life and success, reinforces the idea that determination and discipline remain key ingredients for achievement.
With his career still on an upward trajectory, Osimhen is expected to continue making significant contributions both on the pitch and as a role model for aspiring athletes. His story serves as a reminder that success is often built on a foundation of hard work, resilience, and the ability to overcome adversity.
