Otto Addo Vows Black Stars Will Give Their All Against Mali in Crucial World Cup Qualifier

Ghana head coach Otto Addo has reassured fans that the Black Stars will fight with everything they have when they host Mali in a decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday evening.

The build-up to the fixture has been intense, with Ghana under pressure to deliver following their disappointing 1-1 draw with Chad in N’Djamena last week. In that encounter, Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew had put the Black Stars ahead in the 17th minute, but the team’s hopes of securing maximum points were dashed late on when Celestine Ecau struck in the dying stages, forcing both sides to settle for a share of the spoils.

The result was a blow to Ghana’s qualifying campaign, as it allowed Comoros to close the gap in Group I after they defeated the Central African Republic 2-0. Still, Addo believes the Black Stars remain firmly in control of their own destiny.

Speaking to journalists at a press conference on Sunday, the 48-year-old coach made it clear that his team’s mission has not changed.

“The positive truth is that nothing and the status quo have not changed,” Addo explained. “Comoros have won their game, and they have gotten closer, but for us, nothing has changed. We want to beat Mali at home tomorrow, and that is what we expect to do. The only positive thing about Chad is that we still have it in our own hands, and we can decide our destiny, so we will put in everything to win against Mali.”

The match against Mali has been billed as a must-win clash, not only to restore confidence but also to keep Ghana on course for what would be their fifth appearance at a FIFA World Cup. With Group I shaping up to be closely contested, Addo stressed that his players must remain focused and disciplined for the full 90 minutes.

For the Black Stars, the home advantage at the Accra Sports Stadium is expected to play a pivotal role. The team has traditionally relied on the passionate backing of fans, and Monday’s game is anticipated to draw a large crowd. The Ghana Football Association has urged supporters to fill the stadium and rally behind the team in their quest to secure all three points.

Mali, however, will present a formidable challenge. The Eagles have consistently proven to be tough opponents, with a blend of youthful talent and experience across their squad. Their physicality, tactical awareness, and pace make them a side capable of punishing any lapses in concentration.

Addo acknowledged the threat posed by the visitors but remained confident that the Black Stars have the quality to overcome the challenge if they execute their game plan effectively. He insisted that the focus must remain on Ghana’s strengths—quick transitions, solid defensive organization, and the ability to capitalize on scoring chances.

The coach also emphasized that the players are fully aware of the stakes and the responsibility they carry on their shoulders. With World Cup qualification hanging in the balance, the squad has been reminded that only a win will be enough to keep their ambitions alive and silence growing concerns about the team’s consistency.

Kickoff for the highly anticipated clash is set for 19:00 GMT, and the Black Stars are expected to field a strong lineup, blending seasoned internationals with emerging talents eager to prove themselves on the biggest stage.
As anticipation builds, Addo’s message to fans and players alike has been one of determination and resilience. The coach’s vow that Ghana “will put in everything” reflects not only the urgency of the situation but also the unyielding belief that the Black Stars can rise to the occasion.
The stakes could not be higher. A victory would strengthen Ghana’s grip on qualification and boost morale after the setback in Chad, while a defeat or another draw could complicate their path to North America in 2026.

For now, all eyes will be on Accra, where the Black Stars have a chance to prove their mettle, reclaim momentum, and reaffirm their place among Africa’s elite teams. As Otto Addo put it, destiny remains in Ghana’s hands and the time to seize it is now.
