Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has expressed deep concern about the rising cost of living in Nigeria, revealing the heavy financial burden many citizens face in accessing basic amenities such as electricity.
The celebrated actor, known for his decades-long contribution to the Nigerian film industry, spoke candidly about the country’s worsening economic conditions during a recent appearance on the AIT programme JIGSAW. During the interview, the 78-year-old actor highlighted the daily financial strain he experiences in order to maintain electricity and other essential services in his home.
According to Pete Edochie, the unreliable power supply situation in Nigeria has forced many households to rely heavily on alternative energy sources such as generators, diesel and fuel. This dependency, he said, has become increasingly expensive and places a heavy burden on ordinary citizens who are already struggling with rising living costs.
The veteran actor revealed that he spends approximately ₦40,000 every single day just to ensure his home has electricity.
“I spend ₦40,000 in my home every day for light,” Edochie said during the interview. “It disturbs me a lot. ₦10,000 goes to electricity, and an additional ₦30,000 is spent on diesel and fuel.”
His statement highlights the severe challenges many Nigerians face as a result of persistent power supply issues, rising fuel prices and economic instability. For households and businesses across the country, the lack of stable electricity has become one of the most significant financial and operational challenges.
Nigeria’s electricity sector has struggled for years with inadequate infrastructure, inconsistent power generation and distribution challenges. As a result, millions of homes and businesses rely on generators as a backup source of power, making electricity far more expensive than it should be.
Edochie’s remarks also reflected a broader frustration about the state of governance and the lack of adequate attention to the needs of ordinary citizens.
He questioned why the living conditions of many Nigerians continue to deteriorate instead of improving.
“Nobody seems to be bothered about what is happening to the common man,” he said. “Why must it keep getting worse with each new day? Can we not improve?”
Beyond the issue of electricity and fuel costs, the actor also raised concerns about what he described as the marginalisation of Nigeria’s South-East region in terms of infrastructure development.
He specifically pointed to the absence of railway infrastructure linking parts of the region, describing it as a troubling development that reflects deeper inequalities in national development.
According to Edochie, at one point the South-East was effectively cut off from the country’s railway transportation network, a move he believes reflects a pattern of neglect.
“There was a time when somebody cut off the South-East in terms of railway transportation,” he said during the interview.
The actor questioned why such setbacks continue to occur instead of efforts being made to improve infrastructure and promote national development.
“Why must there be consistency in going backwards?” he asked.
Pete Edochie is widely regarded as one of the most respected figures in Nollywood, Nigeria’s globally recognised film industry. Over the years, he has built a reputation not only for his powerful performances on screen but also for speaking openly about social and political issues affecting Nigerian society.
Throughout his career, he has often used his voice to highlight national concerns, particularly issues relating to governance, development and the welfare of ordinary citizens.
His recent remarks have once again drawn attention to the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s economy, especially the rising cost of energy and the continued struggle to provide reliable electricity to millions of people across the country.
The issue of electricity remains a major concern for both individuals and businesses. Frequent power outages force many people to rely on generators, which require constant spending on petrol or diesel to operate.
For small businesses in particular, the high cost of fuel has significantly increased operational expenses, forcing some to reduce working hours or shut down entirely.
Experts have repeatedly pointed out that improving Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure could significantly boost economic growth, reduce business costs and improve the quality of life for millions of citizens.
However, despite several reforms and investment plans announced over the years, consistent and reliable electricity supply remains a challenge in many parts of the country.
The concerns raised by Pete Edochie also reflect a growing national conversation about economic hardship and the need for stronger policies that directly improve the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.
As one of Nollywood’s most influential voices, his comments are likely to resonate with many citizens who face similar struggles in their daily lives.
Across Nigeria, many households continue to spend significant portions of their income on fuel and alternative energy sources simply to maintain electricity for basic activities such as cooking, refrigeration, lighting and business operations.
Observers say addressing these challenges will require sustained investment in power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure, as well as transparent governance and long-term planning.
For many Nigerians, the hope remains that ongoing reforms in the energy sector will eventually lead to a more stable and affordable electricity supply.
Until then, the concerns raised by voices like Pete Edochie continue to highlight the realities faced by millions of citizens who struggle daily with the rising cost of basic amenities.
