Police Arrest Two Over Alleged Arson at Oyarifa Anointed Down

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with an alleged arson incident that destroyed a residential apartment at Oyarifa Anointed Down in the Greater Accra Region.

In a press statement issued on December 27 and signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, the Police confirmed the arrest of a Canadian national, Jennifer Mae Tomlinson, and her Ghanaian boyfriend, Mohammed Issah, following investigations into the incident.

According to the statement, the arrests relate to a case of causing unlawful damage after a fire gutted an apartment at Oyarifa Anointed Down on December 23. The Police described the incident as a deliberate act allegedly carried out by the suspects, who were occupying the apartment as tenants at the time.

“The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with a case of causing unlawful damage at Oyarifa Anointed Down in the Greater Accra Region,” the statement said.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the Police indicate that the fire was intentionally set. The statement explained that the suspects allegedly set the property ablaze without any apparent provocation, resulting in the complete destruction of the apartment.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects, who were tenants occupying the apartment, deliberately set the property ablaze on December 23, completely destroying it without any apparent provocation,” the Police noted.

The incident is said to have caused significant property damage, raising concerns among residents of the area and prompting swift action by law enforcement agencies. Although no injuries were reported, the destruction of the apartment has left the property owner counting losses and has heightened anxiety within the community.

The Police further outlined the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the two suspects. Mohammed Issah was apprehended on the same day the incident occurred by officers from the Ayimensah Abokobi Police. His arrest followed initial investigations and intelligence gathered shortly after the fire outbreak.

Jennifer Mae Tomlinson, however, reportedly went into hiding after the incident. The Police said she was tracked down and arrested from her hideout on December 25, two days after the fire.

“Suspect Mohammed Issah was arrested by the Ayimensah Abokobi Police on the same day the incident occurred, while suspect Jennifer Mae Tomlinson went into hiding and was later arrested from her hideout on December 25,” the statement said.

Both suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations. The Police indicated that the investigations are still active as officers work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged arson and the motive behind the act.

“Both suspects are currently in police custody assisting investigations, and they will be put before the court to face charges in accordance with the law,” the statement concluded.

The alleged arson has drawn public attention to issues of tenant-landlord disputes and property protection, particularly in rapidly developing areas such as Oyarifa. Residents in the area have expressed concern over safety and are calling for stricter enforcement of laws to deter acts of vandalism and property destruction.

The Police have assured the public that they are committed to ensuring justice in the case and maintaining law and order within the Greater Accra Region. They also urged members of the public to cooperate with the Police by providing credible information that can aid investigations into criminal activities.

Meanwhile, the Command has reiterated its warning that acts of vandalism, arson, and unlawful damage to property are serious criminal offences under Ghanaian law and will be dealt with firmly.

The case adds to ongoing efforts by the to clamp down on crimes that threaten public safety and property. Law enforcement authorities continue to encourage peaceful resolution of disputes and lawful channels for addressing grievances.

As investigations continue, the suspects are expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days to answer charges related to the alleged arson. The Police say further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
