President Akufo-Addo to Commission Flower Pot Interchange on November 19

On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will officially commission the newly constructed Flower Pot interchange, a project aimed at enhancing connectivity and improving traffic flow within the Greater Accra Region. The announcement, made by Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the Jubilee House, highlights this milestone as a significant boost to transportation and quality of life for residents in various neighborhoods.

The new interchange promises to transform travel for residents and commuters, reducing congestion on key routes and streamlining access across several important areas. Once open, the flyover will facilitate smooth movement from Cantonments and Burma Camp to other high-traffic destinations such as East Legon, Spintex, and Tema. It will also link the north and south of the motorway, a vital component in managing Accra’s traffic flow, ultimately improving commute times and easing access for daily travelers.

The project stands as a model of infrastructure development in the region, with features that showcase careful planning and advanced engineering. One of its standout components is an 802-meter dual carriageway on the viaduct, surfaced with asphaltic concrete for durability and better driving conditions. This main section is complemented by a 140-meter ramp connecting Shiashie to the viaduct toward Airport Hills and an 80-meter ramp providing direct access from the viaduct onto the motorway heading towards Tema. These ramps are expected to significantly streamline traffic movement, creating a seamless connection through the interchange and reducing bottlenecks that previously hampered the area.

Beyond the central flyover, the Flower Pot interchange has several auxiliary features that add to its functionality. A newly constructed road has been integrated through the old tunnel at East Legon, creating a convenient connection point for commuters. Additionally, there is an extra 200-meter road extension from the Giffard Road Interchange, designed to improve access to Cantonments. The roundabout at Flower Pot itself has been carefully redesigned, along with its various approaches, to accommodate higher traffic volumes while maintaining safety and efficiency for both drivers and pedestrians.

As part of the interchange’s design, pedestrian walkways are positioned on each side of the flyover, promoting safe pedestrian movement in an area that sees high foot traffic.

Road furniture such as streetlights, road markings, and traffic signals are included to further enhance safety and visibility, ensuring the new interchange can function effectively and safely, day and night.

The Flower Pot interchange project has been under construction since March 7, 2017, reflecting years of work and collaboration between the Government of Ghana and its project partners. The construction was contracted to China Railway No. 5 Engineering Gh. Ltd, with oversight provided by Deoke Consult Ltd as the project’s consultant.

The entire project was planned over a 93-month period, funded by a blend of resources from the Government of Ghana and Afrexim Bank, underscoring the role of both national and international support in realizing this infrastructure advancement.

This interchange, built with a vision to meet the demands of Ghana’s rapidly growing urban areas, signals a move toward modernizing the country’s road network.

The inclusion of pedestrian-friendly walkways, extensive lighting, and organized traffic flow systems speaks to the Ghanaian government’s focus on creating urban environments that cater to the needs of drivers and pedestrians alike. As Accra continues to develop, infrastructure improvements such as the Flower Pot interchange will play a pivotal role in supporting economic growth, enhancing mobility, and raising the standard of living for residents.

Residents and commuters are hopeful that this interchange will bring much-needed relief from traffic delays that have historically affected travel across these busy districts.

With the Flower Pot interchange poised to become a central part of the city’s transportation landscape, this development marks a step forward in addressing transportation challenges and embracing infrastructural progress in the capital.
