President-elect Mahama reaffirms humble leadership, promises unity and hard work

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his grounded approach to leadership, emphasizing his commitment to humility, unity, and the collective progress of Ghana. Speaking at a Thanksgiving service held at the Assemblies of God Church in Accra on Sunday, December 15, Mahama reflected on the life lessons he has learned throughout his political journey and pledged to prioritize the interests of the nation above all else.

Having secured a resounding victory in the December 7 general elections, Mahama used the occasion to express gratitude to Ghanaians for the trust reposed in him. He described the victory not as a personal triumph but as a responsibility to work tirelessly to address the challenges facing the nation. With humility, he assured the congregation that he remains unfazed by the allure of power or the temporary trappings of high office, stating that his focus is on the transformative impact of leadership rather than the accolades that come with it.

The Thanksgiving service provided Mahama with a moment of reflection. He recounted the humbling experience of life outside public office following his defeat in the 2016 elections. Speaking candidly, he shared how the dynamics of relationships shifted during that period, revealing that the privileges and attention he once enjoyed as President diminished drastically after he left office.

“When I lost in 2016, the Christmas hampers stopped coming,” Mahama said, eliciting nods and murmurs of understanding from the congregation. “The many people who used to come to my gate and try to get into my house to see me for a minute stopped coming. It was only my siblings, my family, my closest friends, and my church members who continued to stand closely by me.”

Reflecting on this experience, Mahama acknowledged that the praises and blessings showered on leaders are often tied to the positions they hold. “For me, these trappings of power don’t get to my head,” he stated. “I know that all the praises and blessings you will be showered with by people are temporary, and it is because of the word ‘President’ attached to your name. One day, it will go.”

Mahama expressed profound gratitude for the unwavering support he received during his years out of office. He thanked his family, close friends, and church members for standing by him through challenging times. This, he said, reinforced his resolve to approach leadership with humility and focus on what truly matters—serving the people of Ghana.

The President-elect used the occasion to call for unity and collective effort, urging Ghanaians to put aside differences and join him in tackling the nation’s pressing challenges. He stressed that his victory in the 2024 elections was not an opportunity to bask in personal glory but a mandate to lead with renewed purpose and dedication to the welfare of all citizens.

Mahama acknowledged the immense responsibility placed on his shoulders, stating that the trust reposed in him by the electorate comes with an obligation to deliver on the promises made during the campaign. He emphasized the importance of building a nation that works for everyone, regardless of political affiliation, tribe, or socioeconomic status.

He further urged Ghanaians to focus on the bigger picture—developing the nation and leaving a positive legacy for future generations. “We must think about the Ghana we want to leave for our children and their children,” Mahama noted. “This is not just about me; it’s about what we can achieve together as a people.”

The President-elect’s remarks underscored the transient nature of power and the importance of staying true to one’s values. He reminded the congregation that true leadership is not about the position but about the impact made. “True leaders are those who can inspire change and leave behind a better world,” Mahama said.

The Thanksgiving service also brought together religious leaders, political figures, and citizens who came to celebrate and pray for the success of the President-elect’s administration. Their presence highlighted the significance of faith and unity in driving national progress.

Mahama’s commitment to inclusivity was evident as he called on all stakeholders, including opposition parties, to contribute to the development of Ghana. “Leadership is not a one-man show,” he said. “It requires collaboration, understanding, and respect for diverse views. Together, we can achieve great things.”

He reassured Ghanaians that his administration would focus on critical areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and job creation, pledging to work with both public and private sector partners to implement policies that benefit all citizens.

The President-elect also touched on the need for transparency and accountability in governance. He pledged to lead a government that upholds the principles of integrity and fairness, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and effectively for the benefit of the people.

As the service concluded, Mahama reiterated his gratitude to Ghanaians for their overwhelming trust in him. He promised to lead with humility, fairness, and a renewed sense of purpose. “I am here to serve, not to be served,” he emphasized.

The President-elect’s message resonated deeply with those in attendance, serving as a powerful reminder of the values that underpin effective leadership: humility, service, and a commitment to the common good.

With these principles as his guiding light, Mahama’s journey as Ghana’s leader promises to be one of unity, progress, and hope for a brighter future.
