REGSEC Issues Strong Warning Against Electoral Violence Ahead of 2024 General Elections

The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has issued a firm warning against any forms of electoral violence as the nation approaches the 2024 General Elections. The council, chaired by Daniel Titus-Glover, emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order during this critical period, particularly in light of recent disturbances witnessed during elections in neighboring countries, such as Kenya.

During a simulation exercise conducted by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Greater Accra region, Titus-Glover reiterated that comprehensive security measures have been implemented to ensure a peaceful electoral process. He urged citizens to actively participate in safeguarding the integrity of the elections by rejecting any form of violence.

In his address, Titus-Glover made it clear that the security forces are well-prepared to address any potential disruptions that may arise during the elections. He urged anyone contemplating acts of violence to abandon such intentions immediately, as the consequences for such actions will be severe.

“I urge everyone to refrain from any form of violence,” he stated. “Anyone planning to cause trouble should abandon such intentions immediately as we are fully prepared to respond to any situation in the December Polls.”

Titus-Glover’s remarks come at a time when tensions can rise during election periods, leading to unrest and violence. He emphasized the need for citizens to remain vigilant and proactive in promoting peace. The chairman also addressed the role of individuals who might attempt to incite others to violence, encouraging those targeted to stand firm and reject such provocations.

“If someone tries to incite you to commit violence, refuse and tell them to send their own children instead,” he advised. “Let it be known that the security forces will swiftly act decisively against anyone involved in violence.”

The REGSEC’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process reflects a broader effort to maintain stability and order in the region. By urging citizens to take a stand against violence and fostering a sense of collective responsibility, the council aims to create an environment conducive to free and fair elections.

The security council has engaged in extensive planning and coordination with various security agencies to ensure that all necessary measures are in place. This includes deploying security personnel to sensitive areas and implementing surveillance strategies to monitor potential hotspots for violence.

As the December elections approach, the message from REGSEC serves as a reminder that every citizen has a role to play in upholding peace. The council’s proactive stance against electoral violence underscores the importance of unity and cooperation in navigating the electoral process.

In addition to the warning against violence, Titus-Glover highlighted the importance of public cooperation with security forces. He encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities and to work together to create a safe electoral environment. By fostering a spirit of collaboration, the community can collectively deter any attempts at violence and ensure a smooth electoral process.

In conclusion, the Greater Accra Regional Security Council’s warning against electoral violence is a crucial reminder of the responsibilities that lie with both the security forces and the general public as the nation gears up for the 2024 General Elections. The emphasis on rejecting violence, alongside the commitment to maintaining peace and security, sets the stage for an electoral process characterized by integrity and respect for democratic principles. As the elections draw closer, the call for vigilance and unity resonates strongly, highlighting the shared responsibility of all citizens to safeguard the future of the nation.
