Rising Concerns as Experts Link Male Deaths During Sexual Activity to Drug Use, Underlying Health Risks, and Infidelity

Health and public safety experts have raised growing concerns over the disturbing rise in reported cases of men slumping and dying during sexual activity, particularly in hotels and outside their marital homes. The alarming trend, which has become more frequent in recent years, has prompted calls for deeper public awareness, medical caution, and moral reflection.

In several of the most recent incidents, married men have reportedly lost their lives during sexual encounters with women other than their spouses. Among the latest cases was that of Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, a respected academic from Kogi State University, who reportedly died under similar circumstances. Another man, identified as Mr. Louis Nwachukwu, an employee of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), was also found dead in a hotel in the Mpape area of Abuja after checking in with a woman.

The circumstances surrounding these deaths have become the subject of medical, psychological, and ethical scrutiny, as stakeholders seek to understand the causes—and the preventable dangers—associated with such fatalities.

The Psychology of Overperformance and Its Deadly Cost

Speaking to Africa Live News, Clinical Psychologist and Mental Health Therapist Mcfredericks Akor Edache linked many of these tragic outcomes to the pressure some men face to perform exceptionally during sex, especially when trying to impress a new or younger partner.

“One of the major psychological triggers is performance anxiety and the overuse of sexual enhancement substances,” Edache explained. “Many men feel compelled to live up to unrealistic sexual expectations, which pushes them to take drugs or herbs that artificially stimulate the body.”

He emphasized that the male sexual response naturally comprises a phase of foreplay, climax, and resolution, all of which occur without the need for artificial enhancements. “When men attempt to delay ejaculation or heighten arousal beyond their body’s limits, it can cause excessive blood flow to the genital areas—often at the expense of vital organs like the heart and brain. This imbalance can lead to shortness of breath, heart failure, and in severe cases, death.”

According to Edache, foreplay and mutual emotional connection often lead to better sexual satisfaction and timing for both partners. “There is no need to rush or use enhancement pills to impress someone. Proper preparation and mutual understanding make for a better experience,” he advised.

Sex, Health, and the Human Body: A Risk Not to Be Ignored

Hassan Alowonle, a lecturer and public health advocate in Kwara State, echoed similar sentiments. He emphasized that while sexual activity is a natural human function, it also places physiological stress on the body, particularly the cardiovascular system.

“Sex is a form of exercise—intense physical activity that increases the heart rate and blood pressure,” Alowonle said. “Individuals with pre-existing conditions such as hypertension or heart disease are especially at risk.”

He added that many Nigerian men die during intercourse without prior knowledge of underlying health conditions. “This is why medical fitness, including cardiac screening, is important before marriage or entering into a sexually active relationship,” he urged.

Alowonle also warned against the over-fantasizing of sexual encounters, especially when it involves meeting a long-anticipated or attractive partner. “The excitement alone can cause a spike in blood pressure and heart activity. Add enhancement drugs to that, and you have a potentially lethal combination.”

Drug Abuse and Infidelity: A Dangerous Mix

Divine Mike Akor, a chemist and public affairs analyst, believes the combination of infidelity and unregulated drug use is a primary driver of these tragic outcomes.

“In most of these cases, the men involved were not with their wives but with strangers or casual partners,” Akor noted. “There’s a deeper moral and psychological angle to this—infidelity invites not just emotional and social consequences but physical danger as well.”

He argued that many men use performance-enhancing substances to impress women they barely know, often ignoring the health risks. “These drugs can trigger erratic heart rhythms, high blood pressure, and sudden cardiovascular collapse. And because the partners are often strangers, there’s little or no support available in emergencies.”

Akor further stressed the risk of engaging with unfamiliar women whose medical or spiritual backgrounds are unknown. “Some people even speculate that spiritual forces or ritual manipulation may be at play, although this can’t be verified medically. What we can confirm is that reckless sexual behavior, fueled by drugs and fantasy, can end fatally.”

A Call for Moral Discipline and Medical Responsibility

Experts agree that beyond the medical and psychological implications, the issue also reflects a decline in moral values and personal discipline. Akor urged men to embrace contentment within marriage and avoid the temptation to prove sexual prowess outside it.

“Restoring moral standards is crucial. Men must learn to be satisfied with their spouses and avoid dangerous sexual adventures fueled by lust and ego,” he said.

He also called for tighter regulation of sexual enhancement products and greater public education on their risks. “The government and health institutions must step up campaigns against the indiscriminate use of these drugs. They’re everywhere—on social media, in buses, in markets—promising miracles but delivering death.”

In conclusion, medical experts recommend that sexually active individuals undergo regular health check-ups, particularly cardiac and blood pressure assessments. Safe sex is not just about protection from infections—it’s about protecting the heart, the brain, and ultimately, life itself.
